  1. @Bibi: I know it won’t be fun or easy to settle for other boxes in place of the DTVPal, but your coupons haven’t expired yet. freedtvshop.com didn’t accept coupons that expired earlier than June 20, so you have a little time left. Maybe dtvpal.com will start selling them directly before your coupons expire. (I also had my preorder for 2 DTVPals cancelled from freedtvshop.) And freedtvshop never processed those coupons, so they should work anywhere immediately.

  2. I like many others had a DTVPal preorder with FreeDTVShop and they canceled orders today and announced they will not be carrying it as Sling Media will not be a distributor.

Lets keep each other updated for where we can use our coupons for the DTVPal as not everyone can win and we all want one.

Where do you want these retail updates by the way Dave, in the original DTVPal post?

Thank you for doing this contest Dave.

Because we are allowed only one entry here is one of my comments.

    Best of Luck to everyone.

  3. I pre-ordered 2 DTV Pals from Provantage. Guess I am out of luck based on what I have been reading today about the price change, and NTIA decertification.

In particular I was looking forward to testing the DTVPal out with my Panasonic DMR-EH50 to get an answer WRT to the TVGOS issue, since KCNC in Denver is one of the CBS stations broadcasting the Digital TGOS. I love, love, love my DVR and the control it gives me over recording and watching the few broadcast shows that I do anymore.

I’m not into conspiracy theories but it’s easy to feel that the real intent here to get those of us who have resisted subscribing to cable , TIVO or Dish to give in and sign up.

    So:
Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! :-)

  4. Here’s an interesting excerpt from an article about the DTVPal

Dish Network DTVPal reviewed not same as EchoStar TR-40

Dish Network CEO Charlie Ergen hinted on his TV show “Charlie Chat” that the DTVPal will have an MSRP of $60, while the TR-40 will have an MSRP of $40. Again, no details of the actual differences between these models, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the TR-40 featured some Dish Network advertising to compensate for the lower cost–especially since back in January, Ergen stated that Dish Network would actually lose money on a $40 DTV converter box.

  5. This has been yet another unpleasant brush with a poorly thought out government program–whoda thunk it. Add to this mix the potential for fraud you could drive a truck through. I applied for the coupons (too early as it turns out), I did the research and decided on the DTVPal, I had my coupons in hand. What could possibly go wrong? Like many others, my coupons expired, as EchoStar kept pushing back their delivery dates. Now I find myself with crossed fingers, hoping to win a giveaway.

    Luck to all.

  6. https://zatznotfunny.com/2008-05/dish-team-summit-tweets/

    In particular:

    TR40 renamed DTVpal and shrank 50% – http://twitpic.com/14i3 (5/16)

Presumably, with an external power supply, the DTVPal doesn’t have the heating problems (or concerns) that some other CECBs reportedly have?

Also, I’m curious about the PQ of the DTVPal – davezatz reports it as very good; the CNET interview was somewhat less forgiving (although they mentioned that the output was displayed on an HDTV, which wouldn’t be the case if you simply wanted to convert a 480i TV – you would be less able to see any “rough edges” there).

If I don’t win this giveaway, I plan to get both a Zenith DTT901 and a DTVPal to compare them (a friend of mine will need the DTVPal timing features anyway for VCR recording).
