Continuing our If Money Grew On Trees series, today let’s chat about the new WeaKnees Series3 TiVo with 1 terabyte of storage. While I’d like as much internal storage as possible and let someone else handle the upgrade leg work, $1599 sure seems like a lot of cash for 145hrs of HD recording. Considering a Series3 can be had for around $600 (or lower now and then), $1000 for that extra storage is pricey… especially since external drives are easily supported (750GB @ $250). In addition to their cut, WeaKnees attributes the high price to “the scarcity and price of the 1 terabye SATA drives.” This almost makes that $1499 DirecTV/LCD/antenna combo look reasonable.

It doesn’t even burn HD-DVD or BD of your recordings! (also, not DirecTV compatible)
WeaKnees has always had high margins. You go for the convenience.
The S3 is looking a little less high end with the 1TB internal limit, and that bothers me for the price I paid.
Remember the 14 hour Series1?
Hm, good point – probably why the first TiVo I bought was used. ;)

Remember how many were sold?
um, yeah, my first dvr was the 14 hour ReplayTV
I just can’t justify weaknees pricing now that the esata is useable.
Still have two series 1s running with upgraded HDDs and lifetime service.
I still have an upgraded series 1 that came with a lifetime, but I transferred it to my S3. I’m not sure whether I’ll keep the service on the S1 after the 12 months has passed…
