Out With The Old, In With The New: Muziq Replaces UpStage

I was pretty psyched a few months back when Sprint told me they were shipping a Samsung UpStage to evaluate… However, the reality of the device hasn’t been impressive at all. I’m a big fan of Samsung products, and over the years I’ve probably owned more Samsung phones than any other (back in the day … Read more

Mio Digiwalker c310x GPS Update

Anyone else also pick up that Mio GPS for $200 (or less) recently? Frankly, I had given up hope of ever seeing any map updates on this device and was ready to ebay it… However, Mio is now taking orders for a firmware and map update DVD. At only $25, I figure I’ll give it … Read more

Deal of the Day: Nokia 770 @ $140

True, the 700 is Nokia’s previous iteration of the Internet Tablet — But at $140, via Mobile Planet, maybe it doesn’t matter. It offers WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and, while you probably won’t get Skype compatability, it looks like many of the other new N800 software features will be available. I’m tempted…

Dave’s Last iPhone Post (For Real)

iphone.jpg

I admit it… I just can’t stop touching the iPhone. It’s an engineering marvel on so many levels. However, like Kevin of jkOnThe Run, the iPhone isn’t for me (yet). But before I tell you what I need to make the “switch” I have more iPhone shenanigans to share…

I ran to Kinkos to send a fax ($2/page?!) and since the AT&T store was only a block away, I dropped in for my third 1/2 hour on the device. First off, my thumb typing skills have improved – even without applying Brian Lam’s (slowish) sliding technique. Second, the phone stores text message conversations. An earlier phone number was still on the device, so I took the liberty of texting them “iPhone!” About 30 seconds later, the phone vibrated and the mysterious person with a 202 area code responded, “Take me home!” I assume they wanted me to take the iPhone home. To them. OK, so if you didn’t find that as amusing as I did, go check out this video for a chuckle. Nice job, Mark! That woman’s lucky to only be out $800 and that pompous attitude… I wouldn’t recommend flashing $16k cash in any neighborhood.

A Few More Thoughts On iPhone

iphone-dc.jpg

Not only did I snap a line in NYC yesterday, I managed to make it home to DC before 6PM and on my walk home caught a few dozen people (above) lined up outside another AT&T store.

Surprisingly, I encountered the only American unaware of and unimpressed with this historical milestone. The teenager saw my camera and news crew across the street – and our conversation went something like this: “What happened?” “iPhone!” “Oh, that comes out today?” “6PM!” “Oh, hm.”

Later in the evening I headed back out to AT&T. They had sold their stock (a number they wouldn’t reveal) in under an hour and the store was pretty quiet… I only waited about 5 minutes for my turn on the iPhone.

iPhone Reviews Are In, A Few Surprises

Obviously the iPhone review embargo was lifted last night. I imagine Apple would have liked to hold coverage until the day of or the day before launch, but I have faith their marketing department knows what they’re doing. Perhaps they wanted to leave a little time to announce the Bluetooth earpiece and dock plus surprise … Read more

A Question Of Power

power-adapters.jpg

Surge protection is one of those things, like data backup, that you don’t deal with until you’ve been burned.

I had my first warning last year at Panera… While using their free WiFi on a work-provided Dell, the wall outlet fried my laptop. It wasn’t a total loss, but the battery/unit would no longer charge. Fortunately, my employer swapped my existing hard drive into a new computer. But I didn’t learn my “naked” power lesson.

Two weeks ago, at home, my Macbook Pro power adapter (near where it connects to the computer) started smoking and melted. Fortunately, I was working on it at the time and was able to quickly remove the adapter from both the computer and the non-protected wall outlet before starting a fire. (I’m sure my landlord thanks me.) And this finally motivated me enough to do something…

iPhone Service Plans Announced, Not Too Shabby

iPhone week continues! Earlier today Apple and AT&T announced service plans for the iPhone… And while they’ve said all along they wouldn’t be subsidizing hardware, they’re obviously subsidizing subscriptions. The least expensive plan runs $60/month, which includes unlimited data and 450 minutes of talk time. For comparison, I pay AT&T $80/mo (1/2 voice, 1/2 data) … Read more
