Mio Digiwalker c310x GPS Update

miomap.jpgAnyone else also pick up that Mio GPS for $200 (or less) recently? Frankly, I had given up hope of ever seeing any map updates on this device and was ready to ebay it… However, Mio is now taking orders for a firmware and map update DVD. At only $25, I figure I’ll give it a shot. FYI The site rejected my AmEx and a Visa gift card. Details here:

Compared to the previous map version, this version has improved road position accuracy for better map display, has added new or corrected one-way streets for improved driving directions, has added more highway exit points for improved driving directions, added more lower class roads for more routing options using back roads, and improved the over-all address match rate to help you find all the places you want to go.

For speculation and whining, head on over to GpsPassion. I don’t care if I have fewer points of interest or if I lose the ability to hack the device, as long as the Mio now actually gets me  where I’m going (efficiently). If not, I’ll take another look at Telenav (and carrying fewer devices).

  1. I don’t have high hopes for the update either. The data is one thing but the software is so hopelessly flawed that unless they are updating the firmware as well it really won’t matter.

  2. I’m thankful for the update to the map & navigation information for the Mio C310x. However, there are a couple of major drawbacks I’m concerned about. 1) Going from a 3.5million POI to only 1.5million POI is a big drawback. Being able to find things nearby when I’m traveling is THE reason I like GPS systems. 2) The shipping charge is excessive at $9.95 that takes longer than the 2 weeks advertised. I would rather them have raised the real price to account for any costs/profits they want rather than load in excess “shipping” charges.

  3. Just to be clear, I do give them credit for making an update available for $15, a reasonable price. I’m just bummed that they didn’t keep me impressed (as I was when the original product came out with good bang for the buck).
There REALLY needs to be a way to easily make my own POIs and keep them on an SD card.

  4. Jon, they’ve raised the fee. It was originally just $25 ($15 for disc, plus $10 shipping) – Trust me, I know… I ended up disputing the charge with AmEx when Mio didn’t ship it. Fortunately, I’ve left them behind.
