The WD TV Live Plus Giveaway

So, when the WD TV Live Plus (~$120) was announced I made arrangements with Western Digital to take a look at a review loaner. As it turns out, my buddy Tom couldn’t wait and picked up a unit which he reviewed here. Overall, he came away relatively pleased with media streamer’s local media playback capabilities and new Netflix integration despite a few bugs we hope will be resolved with a firmware update.

But we still have to do something with my device. Which is why I shot a pair of Roku/WD TV comparison shots (below) and have been cleared to give it away. WD’s box a bit smaller and sleeker than Roku’s, and even though you don’t see component outputs, that connectivity is indeed provided via a bundled break-out cable. Wireless capabilities are also an add-on. However, you’ll need to bring your own card.

  8. We use the WDTV boxes in a sort of unusual fashion where I work. We pair them with a device that converts HDMI to HD-SDI and use them as video sources when demonstrating our HDTV production equipment. We must own about 12 of the little beasts.

    Since the HDMI interface by its nature includes HDCP we can only use footage that we shot ourselves. Still, they are working out well as traveling sources for our demo activity.

    It would be nice to have one at home, too.

  17. I’m still confused on why they launched a new product with such incremental update over the WD TV Live. Is it too much to later update the WD TV Live firmware? I question how many of those owners will upgrade for these features.

  26. Been waiting for something like this for a year. Our PS3 can’t read anything without throwing up its hands in a “AHH!!! I can’t play this file!!!” fit. Would love to have something that can play our NAS files, and for free at that!

  36. I have been thinking about picking one of these up for the bedroom tv. I have ps3 in the living room that uses ps3 media server, but the fan is too loud for the bedroom environment. So, a free one would be nice!

  57. I recently gave up cable (the economy), and have begun free streaming/netflix, unfortunately there’s no great Mac solution. Based on your review i think this would be a great thing for me to try.

  63. It would be so nice to finally get rid of my original xbox that I hacked to run xbmc! I couldn’t find any player that reliably plays .iso files at sub $250 pricing except the popcorn hour. Adding netflix at this pricepoint is icing on the cake!

  181. If this can use DLNA/UPnP to kick my Roku’s butt to the curb. I’m getting tired of waiting for Roku’s promise to “stream your media” though I’m amused it’s no longer their tag line.

  189. I’ve been looking for something to play local content, stream network content and access internet content (specifically Netflix). This is the first device to ship that checks all the boxes. I definitely want one.

    Thanks for the review; been interested in this since it now supports Netflix streaming. Would be nice to know if Hulu Plus is also on the roadmap for this device via firmware update.
