The WD TV Live Plus Giveaway

So, when the WD TV Live Plus (~$120) was announced I made arrangements with Western Digital to take a look at a review loaner. As it turns out, my buddy Tom couldn’t wait and picked up a unit which he reviewed here. Overall, he came away relatively pleased with media streamer’s local media playback capabilities and new Netflix integration despite a few bugs we hope will be resolved with a firmware update.

But we still have to do something with my device. Which is why I shot a pair of Roku/WD TV comparison shots (below) and have been cleared to give it away. WD’s box a bit smaller and sleeker than Roku’s, and even though you don’t see component outputs, that connectivity is indeed provided via a bundled break-out cable. Wireless capabilities are also an add-on. However, you’ll need to bring your own card.

Entering the WD TV Live Plus giveaway is as easy as it gets, simply leave a comment. (US residents in the lower 48 only, please.) We’ll choose the winner at random in a few days.

  1. We use the WDTV boxes in a sort of unusual fashion where I work. We pair them with a device that converts HDMI to HD-SDI and use them as video sources when demonstrating our HDTV production equipment. We must own about 12 of the little beasts.

Since the HDMI interface by its nature includes HDCP we can only use footage that we shot ourselves. Still, they are working out well as traveling sources for our demo activity.

It would be nice to have one at home, too.

  2. Hi Dave,
Got a Roku (two actually) but the WD Live seems like it ash more local media options. Would love to give it good home :)

  3. I’m still confused on why they launched a new product with such incremental update over the WD TV Live. Is it too much to later update the WD TV Live firmware? I question how many of those owners will upgrade for these features.

    Hope I win!!! Yeeeeee!

  4. Been waiting for something like this for a year. Our PS3 can’t read anything without throwing up its hands in a “AHH!!! I can’t play this file!!!” fit. Would love to have something that can play our NAS files, and for free at that!

  5. Does it do Huli?. Actually it doen’t matter. Any new tech is good tech at my house!
    Unless you ask the missus…

  6. I have been thinking about picking one of these up for the bedroom tv. I have ps3 in the living room that uses ps3 media server, but the fan is too loud for the bedroom environment. So, a free one would be nice!

  7. I’m interested to see how this stacks up to my Popcorn Hour with regard to codec/container compatability.

  8. I recently gave up cable (the economy), and have begun free streaming/netflix, unfortunately there’s no great Mac solution. Based on your review i think this would be a great thing for me to try.

  9. It would be so nice to finally get rid of my original xbox that I hacked to run xbmc! I couldn’t find any player that reliably plays .iso files at sub $250 pricing except the popcorn hour. Adding netflix at this pricepoint is icing on the cake!

  10. So why do you limit your giveaways to the lower 48? Alaska has both TV AND Internet these days you know :-)

  11. Thanks for thinking of your audience, Zatz crew! Thank to WD for thinking of us too! Competition in this class of device is really heating up. I’d love to be able to tell others about this box from experience ;)

Love the blog, keep ’em coming.

  12. First thanks for the reviews thinking about getting one of these if of course I don’t win one here

  13. After reading the review the other day, I thought to myself “Maybe I should get one.” Thanks for giving us all the chance at a freebie!

  14. Free or not my Wife always has problems with any electronic gadgetry, a risk I’m willing to take!

  15. Already less than a 1% chance at this point, but that’s still better than the lottery. And cheaper too.

  16. Thanks Dave,
I do have the Live version, but I would like to have the Netflix enabled version of the box.

  17. I am considering buying one of these, the review pushed me in that direction.

    But, free would be better.

  18. I was just looking at one ofthese the other day. Roku as well and can’t decide. Free would help that decision!

  19. I’d love to be in the running to win this. Maybe replace one of my Linksys extenders.

  20. I am definitely ditching cable TV, but keeping cable internet. I still can’t decide between Roku and this WDTV.

  21. I would be very happy to have this be my first ZNF giveaway win. I would use this several hours per day “thats fer sure, thats fer dang sure”
Thanks Dave, keep them deals a commin!!

  22. I was going to buy one of these, but then I bought a new Samsung TV with Netflix built-in :) I’d still love it for another room in the house!

  23. Let’s make it happen!
I was also thinking about picking one up, but I’ll give this a shot first :D

  24. If this can use DLNA/UPnP to kick my Roku’s butt to the curb. I’m getting tired of waiting for Roku’s promise to “stream your media” though I’m amused it’s no longer their tag line.

  25. I’ve been looking for something to play local content, stream network content and access internet content (specifically Netflix). This is the first device to ship that checks all the boxes. I definitely want one.

  26. I would love to give the new Netflix feature a try. Of course, I would love to have a good reason to start a Netflix subscription, too.

  27. Thanks for having the contest! I’d love to have this in my home and I’m sure the wife would love it as well. You have a great site and I’m glad I found you through twitter!

  28. (Pick me! Pick me!)

Thanks for the review; been interested in this since it now supports Netflix streaming. Would be nice to know if Hulu Plus is also on the roadmap for this device via firmware update.
