Yeah, there will be a disproportionate amount of iPad coverage this week. However, we promise not to run a single April Fools Day post. Fair enough?
The first round of reviews are in, and they’re not surprising given all we know. The tone is generally very positive, yet we’re cautioned to keep our expectations in check. As the iPad is an amazing media consumption device, but perhaps suitable for only light duty content creation.
Apple’s press relations team primarily seeded mainstream print media with devices. As such, the Mossbergs, Pogues, and Baigs are limited in the breadth and depth of their discussion. In fact, many of these reviews aren’t much different from iPad launch coverage. And questions remain. Fortunately, one tech enthusiast publication received a review unit. And PC Magazine dug deeper, providing 4,000 words, tons of photos including an unboxing gallery, and the video above. So I suggest you start your research with them.

It strikes you when you first touch an iPad. The form just feels good, not too lightweight or heavy, nor too thin or thick. It’s sensual. It’s tactile. I like it a lot. But it’s the things I never knew it made possible — to be revealed or not in the coming months — that will determine whether I love it.

It’s interesting to note that, according to Twitter chatter by involved parties, both main gadget blogs (Engadget and Gizmodo) had their iPad meetings cancelled at the last moment and didn’t get a review unit.
Gizmodo did run a few not-so-glowing pieces on Apple (e.g. a series detailing 27″ iMac issues and an anti-iPad post after its introduction that got 1.5 million hits), but they have generally been pro-iPad lately and are very pro-Apple overall.
Can’t think what Engadget did to get this treatment though…
I just saw where the Time app is $4.99 a magazine. 52 weeks a year at $4.99 each. $250 dollars a year for Time? Are they insane? I can get a full year subscription for $20 from Amazon delivered to my house by mail.
If you are looking for the all around perfect product, unfortunately you will be disappointed, as there are features that should be included, which are not – such as a camera, Flash support, and multitasking abilities. However everything else it does, it does impeccably. The new map system on the iPad is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the roundup. We really like our iPad though it doesn’t have all the features I wanted, it’s still a good buy.
