Music Tax Hysteria!

Warner’s new music service proposal has the blogosphere all abuzz this AM. It’s mostly been a narrow-minded, short-sighted reception, which emphasizes challenges the music industry faces in winning back paying customers. (Threatening college students with lawsuits hasn’t been a good marketing strategy.) The recording industry’s album sales revenue model doesn’t work within the current digital … Read more

Netflix Says Sorry and Gives 5% Credit

I want to follow up on the all-day Netflix outage reported on Monday. Because my DVD delivery was affected by the outage, Netflix sent me a nice apology e-mail giving me a 5% credit for my inconvenience. It’s a nice gesture that is appreciated. Check out more of Brent’s reflections on tech, gadgets, software and … Read more

Comcast and BitTorrent Agree To Something

Comcast and BitTorrent have announced they’re cozying up

Comcast Corporation and BitTorrent, Inc. announced today that they will undertake a collaborative effort with one another and with the broader Internet and ISP community to more effectively address issues associated with rich media content and network capacity management. While BitTorrent and Comcast are talking directly, they are also in discussions with other parties to help facilitate a broader dialogue and cooperation across industries. Both BitTorrent and Comcast expressed the view that these technical issues can be worked out through private business discussions without the need for government intervention.

In the release, Comcast also mentions they’ll move to a “protocol agnostic” network management system by the end of the year, though I didn’t see anything regarding “source” or “destination” agnostic. Theater of the Mundane: Move Tech Update

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to have my Comcast cable and Internet service migrated on Saturday (as they originally suggested), but the Cradlepoint 3G router with Sprint AirCard has ensured continued TiVoCast downloads, CoD4 on Xbox Live, and web surfing (work, too). The Airport Extreme is running in bridge mode, so I don’t have to change … Read more

Netflix Offline for 11 Hours, Shipping Delayed

Yes, I caught the news that Netflix was down for 11 hours yesterday (thanks for the tips!) and experienced it first hand. However, I had limited blogging time available and chose to cover the more significant Sirius/XM merger update. Site outages aren’t so unusual, though this Netflix one is notable for its length… AND apparently … Read more

Virgin America, SmugMug, and Free Flights

I generally fly into the Bay Area on a monthly basis and one of Virgin America‘s fledgling routes is Washington (Dulles) to San Francisco. Being a frequent traveler and a technology connoisseur, I made sure to get in on one of their early flights last October. Unfortunately, my extensive (in-progress) write-up was on a shared … Read more

Control SageTV Over The Web

One of my favorite Home Theater PC software programs is SageTV. SageTV turns your PC into a souped-up TiVo providing DVR functions, a movie and music interface, plus so much more. For new users of SageTV, the first plugin I always recommend they install is the user-created and supported SageTV Web User Interface. The Web … Read more

Breaking: DOJ Permits XM & Sirius To Merge

After a long 13 months, the DOJ has finally approved the proposed XM and Sirius merger. Keep an eye on Orbitcast in the coming hours and days for continuing coverage. (Concessions…? FCC?) After a careful and thorough review of the proposed transaction, the Division concluded that the evidence does not demonstrate that the proposed merger … Read more
