Theater of the Mundane: Move Tech Update

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to have my Comcast cable and Internet service migrated on Saturday (as they originally suggested), but the Cradlepoint 3G router with Sprint AirCard has ensured continued TiVoCast downloads, CoD4 on Xbox Live, and web surfing (work, too). The Airport Extreme is running in bridge mode, so I don’t have to change any wireless settings on my devices. After a quick reformat and disk password keychain addition, I’ve also verified Time Machine AirDisk backup functionality for LAN archiving. (Mozy @ $5/mo is handling the redundant off-site backup of irreplaceable files and photos.) Powerline connectivity and OTA ATSC reception are both good in the new place, though the TiVo units still transfer and receive data too slowly.

  1. Dave it sounds like you’re getting things in order. So tell me, are you using Apple computers as well as windows or are you all Apple these days?

  2. MacBook Pro for most things, including the day job. Vista Media Center desktop in the den/office. This is the fewest computers I’ve had at one time in probably 7 years… I just handed off an older notebook (XP) to the ebay consignment shop, and they’ve already moved an older Mac. I fire up Ubuntu every now and then – probably more-so with the new Beta and in-Windows install option. (My Windows backup solution has been Acronis for the last few years.)

  3. Brent, It’s been a decent experience. They take a pretty significant cut, but they do all the heavy lifting including writing the description, many photos, answering pre-sales questions, packing, and shipping. I just drop stuff off and give them some listing tips. On two or three of the ~17 auctions I called in and had them modify the listing, because they didn’t get it exactly right. But overall, they’re good people to work with (the store is a franchise, local owners) and checks just show up at my place. I’d make more doing it on my own, but I’ve been saying I’d sell some of this stuff for a more than a year and never got around to it.
