Is TiVo update 20.4.8 the one that enables Plex?

TiVo has a long and storied history of miscommunication. So, while they’re still promising Plex will arrive with software update 20.4.7… those of us on that build for weeks are doubtful the switch will be flipped at this point. Enter 20.4.8, for which TiVo is now soliciting prioritity signups. Of course, we still don’t know if Plex will be a native app versus something buried within Opera, nor do we know its capabilties. But, we sure are anxious to find out, as the potential is awesome.

TiVo Priority Update Request (20.4.8)

We are preparing to release a software update (20.4.8) for TiVo Roamio, TiVo Mini, and TiVo Premiere boxes. Boxes will be updated in groups. If you would like your TiVo Roamio, TiVo Mini, or TiVo Premiere to be in one of the first groups to be updated, please enter your TiVo Service Number below.

  1. @ScaryMike – I use a service called Changedetection.com that emails me any time http://www.tivo.com/priority/ changes. You’ll get an email whenever sign up is switched on or off (or sometimes if they do minor text edits), but it seems to work well. Not sure if there are other services that do this, but that’s what I use.

  2. Sigh. Just when I fell in love with TiVo… I am a TiVo household no more!! We moved, and I had such a hard time with Comcast during the move that I ended up taking a pretty good deal on U-Verse. The free wireless units were a plus – makes it easier to mount TVs where *I* want them.

Anybody interested in buying a 4 tuner Roamio upgraded to a 3TB drive? I also have one Mini and one Stream. The TiVo has a one year contract, but it ends in July. The Stream has no service cost, and neither does the Mini (I bought it less than 30 days before they dropped the monthly, and they switched it for me no charge).

  3. Seems that these updates are coming more often these days, as opposed to their “seasonal” (with some seasons skipped) updates.

  4. @Scott G. Lewis

I am interested in the Mini and Stream, if the price is right. If Mr. Zatz is comfortable with it, he can pass my email information to you directly since you did not post it.

(I don’t want to have these posts digress into a virtual Craigslist, so….)

    @Dave Zatz
Feel free to delete this post when you are done taking any actions, and thanks again for the heads up on the TiVo software updates.

  5. Yeah Dave… I wasn’t thinking. :) If you’re comfortable, you can give him my email or me his, or just delete the whole comment thread no hard feelings. :)

  6. I’ll make the connection, no worries. And I’m mostly chill about the comments as long as folks aren’t attacking one another. All good.

Laryr, yeah, TiVo has definitely increased their output since wrapping up the Haxe rewrite. I’m guessing that sidelined a lot of things for a year or more. Perhaps things are also more modular these days. I know they’d been going in that direction for awhile, too.

  7. Is it too late to try and see if I can possibly jump in on this Tivo fire sale? :) I fear yes, as I always catch things too late.

Anyway, I checked yesterday to see if I had 20.4.7 and I did, but no plex; put myself on the priority list for .8…

Greg – If I am looking at it correctly, try Messages & Settings > Account & System Information > System Information. It will tell you what version you have there

  8. Mini and Stream are possibly but not def. spoken for. Roamio is for grabs. I have AT&T at our new house now converting a jack to CAT-5 for our U-Verse install as we speak… The iOS app isn’t bad. It’s no TiVo but it’s better than Xfinity’s streaming app. Too bad it blocks AirPlay.

I don’t want to post anymore about sales since I feel bad clogging up Dave’s blog so if anybody including yourself wants to inquire I am my first initial, middle initial and lastname followed by 100 at gmail.

  9. i called plex (new customer as of yesterday) and they said plex was crashing on 4.7, hence they’re probably working on 4.8.

  10. I hope TiVo takes advantage of the opportunity to make Plex a native app with also “one pass” integration. I could be dreaming but: This would be a game changer of ULTIMATE proportions for digital media viewers. Heck the one pass is already a game changer in and of it self. Integrating it to server apps like PLEX is just a no brainer moving forward if you ask me. Wouldnt it use the same technology already existing that scan netflix amazon and hulu for one pass shows? I am not a programmer so it could be much more complex than this seeing as how every PLEX account/server has different media in their library. This integration would likely be more on the PLEX side of things because they would have to allow TiVo the right to scan your server. Does Plex currently allow this with any other programs or uses that anyone knows of?

  11. I put myself on the 20.4.8 queue, so I got excited when I force-connected and the restart installed an update on my Roamio. Now I have 20.4.7a-USA-6-848. And it doesn’t have Plex. Bah.
