Hands On The Sony Dash v2

It’s a bit strange to be running our third Chumby-related CES post, but as I was cruising off the show floor at I ran into Sony’s revised Dash widget station. As discussed earlier this week, the new models are due mid year and the higher tier unit features enclosures in multiple colors and the oft requested rechargeable battery.

First off, the exterior of the new Dash units are much refined and feel higher quality. And while I didn’t actually have time to pull up any audio apps, the back features a rather large speaker grill. Unfortunately, in this pre-production model, the screen didn’t seem much more responsive. But, hopefully, that’s something Sony will continue to work on prior to release. Lastly, I pulled the plug to see how the integrated battery would work… and was met with a black screen. Turns out these demo models aren’t fully equipped.

  1. Hoping the sound has a little more bass. My Best Buy Insignia Infocast (aka Chumby One) has better depth than the Dash. But I do like me the Dash OS and display. Looking forward to a refresh.

  2. We’ll never beat Engadget or CNET, but hopefully we get a few interesting nuggets up. :) I have a much smaller backlog than I did last year, but there’s some stuff Engadget pointed out to me that I didn’t have time to track time but we’ll want to cover it anyhow.

  3. I picked up version 1.0 the other day. I was disappointed that it is useless without internet (except as an alarm clock). I had planned to load some pics and music onto usb and have it function as a music playing picture frame for now, and then if my office IT loosened up the shackles maybe add weather updates, maybe stock updates. But san net, its a clock. I returned it.
