Photo of the Day: The iPod Touch Camera

If you needed more proof, beyond the pre-release spy shots and post-release teardown, that the updated iPod Touch was intended to house a camera, perhaps this photo will do the trick. Above, you see a work buddy’s new iPod Touch connected to a Windows laptop without an iTunes install. And the OS seems to think there’s a camera in the vicinity. Of course, this could very well be the default behavior of the previous iPod Touch under Windows. But given the rumors and speculation, we found this somewhat curious and amusing. To meet our blogger due diligence requirements, we’ll connect a 2nd gen iPod Touch in the next day or so to see what we get.

  1. My 2G iPod Touch does the same thing with iPhoto on the Mac; I have a children’s program on it that allows the editing of drawings, and iPhoto seems to think that this makes it a camera.

So it’s probably not evidence, I’m afraid.

  2. I was importing some photos with Picasa last night and had my G1 iTouch hooked up. Picasa suggested the iPod as the most likely camera till it found my Canon. I’m pretty sure it just looks for memory cards that contain images, which my iTouch does.

  3. Yep, this myth is busted. We connected a 2nd gen iPod Touch to the same XP laptop and saw the same result. We’re in agreement with the consensus here that an unidentified USB device with image files will show up as a memory card or camera. On to the next conspiracy theory… :)

I plugged my jail broken iPhone into my computer and, using Wire Shark, I saw it phone home to the legal departments of:

    AT&T, Apple, and the RIAA

    :P

  5. Uh. No. Nice try. 1G iPod Touch does this if you’ve save ANY images to your photo gallery (images off web pages, from emails or from screen caps). Way to make a Dilbert out of yourself posting this BS.
