The ZNF Annual Update

The blog portion of ZNF is a little over a year old. In that time I’ve been interviewed for print (New York Times, Mercury News, Wall Street Journal), cited by mainstream web destinations (CNET, CNN Money, PC World), contributed to Engadget, had several job offers, pissed off at least one CEO, pissed off at least one editor, and received well over a million page views. But really, why stop there?

Year Two, though only a few weeks in, has started with a bang: Mari joined the team, Davis is contributing content, and posts are being syndicated on prominent sites (Yahoo Finance, San Francisco Chronicle).

Oh yeah… I may have also been asked to write an article for PC Magazine! Continuing Year Two’s ‘no man is an island‘ theme, I recruited Kevin Tofel to help document adding HDTV capabilities to a PC on the cheap. With HD tuners selling for under $100 these days and requiring just modest computer specs, it’s a fairly simple proposition. Not only will you get to see our writing, you’ll once again get to witness my poor photography skills and learn why I don’t have a future as a hand model. PC Mag’s digital edition was just released, and the 12/5/06 print edition should hit newstands in the next week or so.

Speaking of Kevin, we’ve booked Circus Circus as blogger headquarters for CES in January. I’m psyched to attend for the first time, though I’d prefer to stay at the Bellagio or Venetian. ;) Hopefully Mari can join us in Vegas with a consulting gig, as I can barely justify my personal expenses. If you’re interested in sponsoring the site during CES or in general, now is a good time to get in touch… If you’d like to chat with me at CES, now is also a good time to get your request in.

Last but not least, the most rewarding part of blogging has been the people I’ve had the fortune of interacting with — from answering reader email to chatting with company CEOs. It’s truly been an honor, both flattering and humbling. I hope you guys are having as much fun as I, and come away from ZNF entertained and informed.

  1. Congrats on year one, and good luck on year two. :-)

This’ll be my 4th CES running. Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes, because you walk – A LOT. And a lot of the place is concrete they roll thin carpet out on. So it lacks padding.

If your hotel is near a monorail stop I also advise buying a monorail pass the first day and using it. The monorail beats the shuttle busses, hands down. And just forget cabs, at the end of the day there is a line literally hours long for cabs at the LVCC. If you need one, it is generally better to hop a shuttle bus to a hotel – ANY hotel – and get a cab there. Of course, the lines for the busses aren’t short. :-)

We need to have dinner or something while we’re both there.
