TiVo’s KidZone software update (client & server components) includes a new feature to repair personal settings should they get out of whack. How would those settings lose sync, you ask? Hard drive upgrade. While it’s unofficial and unsupported, if you’ve opted in to KidZone or Guru Guides and upgrade your hard drive, TiVo will repopulate your Season Passes and Wishlists on that new drive. Awesome! I’m more than willing to trade a little privacy (I can’t be the only one with a Paris Hilton Wishlist, can I?) for an “online” backup of my recording preferences.

It is nice to see a company like TiVo supporting users investing in their products rather than suing them!
Is it just the software update that does it? Or does it require that you actually use KidZone and Guru Guides?
Guru Guides and/or KidZone need to be enabled to give TiVo permission to collect that sort of data. Once your privacy setting becomes “Opt-In Full,” the recording information will be collected. You don’t actually need to use or subscribe to KZ/GG once the privacy policy has been set.
It’s probably also worth mentioning that you still have to load an image on a hard drive before dropping it into the TiVo. What would be really nice is, with some future upgrade, being able to move Season Passes and Wishlists from one TiVo to another.

Or, thanks to the TiVo mothership knowing the season passes and wishlists for all the TiVos on your account, enabling co-op scheduling among them.
Why should that be a secret. This is a great benefit. I could care less if they know what I watch/record….
