Arris Talks Sling, Streaming Sticks, and More

Arris Sling gateway MS4000 Front AngleX

Hot on the heels of its exclusive partnership with Sling, Arris is already talking additional set-top enhancements. With smarter gateways available to handle video transcoding in the home, Arris wants to slim down client devices and create new form factors that challenge the traditional set-top box. At the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo show, the company described plans to develop hardware like the Chromecast streaming stick. That type of dongle would plug directly into a user’s TV and connect over Wi-Fi to the home gateway – to expand options for whole-home networking and simplify access to premium content from multiple TVs.

Meanwhile on the Sling front, an industry insider suggested at the SCTE Expo that the placeshifting deal was done twice with Arris; first with Arris of old, and second with Arris after the Motorola acquisition. Now that everything’s signed, sealed, and delivered, it’s not clear if any major U.S. cable operators will integrate a Sling solution. However, given Netflix looks to be on the table, I supposed anything’s possible these days in cable land. Certainly cable companies are watching their satellite TV counterparts to see how far they can push the envelope with programmers.

Philips Dusk to Dawn CFLs

philips-dusk-to-dawn

Both my wife and my HOA have told me I need to keep our outdoor lighting on at night. While I’m not entirely sold on the rationale and am a reluctant switch flipper, I am a dutiful husband and neighbor.

When flourescents first got attention, I bought into their allure and outfitted my condo in early generation CFLs. Of course, as most folks in my situation quickly realized, this new fangled tech wasn’t all it was cracked up to be – dim, buzzing, slow lighting, lesser lifespans than equivalent incandescents, questionable cost/benefit, etc. So these days I’m much more judicious in how and where I apply fluorescent lighting. And I’d originally identified relatively inexpensive Ikea LEDs for my outdoor lighting project, consisting of four sconces, with intentions of leaving the fixtures on 24/7. Yet, at some point, I came across the Philips Dusk to Dawn CFL on Amazon… and changed up the plan. The 60-watt equivalent bulbs run $7-$8 each and feature a rotating light sensor, with the thought being that the bad guys will assume someone is home as lights go on and off. Also, I was hopeful these might be better suited for outdoor use.

Having run the Philips CFLs a few months,

TiVo & Sling Duke It Out

Hot on the heels of Roamio’s out-of-home streaming release, TiVo and Sling have begun trading blows online. And, once again, TiVo is positioning their DVR as the One Box. However, unlike the Premiere platform, they have a much more compelling argument this time around… featuring that aforementioned streaming and a usable Netflix client. However, without the Opera TV app store, they still fall ridiculously short of Roku’s vast library of channels and TiVo’s limited DIAL support is no match Apple’s infinitely capable Airplay.

In the other corner, Sling lays out a streaming comparison that is mostly correct. TiVo Roamio is currently limited to iOS and WiFi, whereas a Slingbox is largely agnostic when it comes to connection and platform. Sling claims Roamio is incapable of automatic quality adjustment, which we now know to be inaccurate

Hacking Uber (For Cigarette Delivery)

Uber Icecream via The Verge
Uber Icecream via The Verge

While Uber is generally known as the modernized, Internet-connected car service, a friend-of-a-friend has discovered it can also be used for efficient local delivery. Of course, the rates may exceed a specialized service like Takeout Taxi and your driver may object, but the courier/delivery possibilities seem nearly endless. And the Southern Californian in question had a driver arrive at his home at which point he requested the car drive off to buy and deliver a pack of smokes. Which he did. Score?

New TiVo Remote On The Way

By way of the FCC (1, 2), we’ve learned a new TiVo remote and RF USB dongle are on the way. While the rear looks quite similar to the new TiVo Roamio remote, due to a short term confidentiality request, we’re unable to confirm if this is the incoming Roamio Slide with QWERTY keyboard or … Read more

TiVo Roamio Remote Viewing Has Arrived!

tivo-streaming-app

As you can see above and described here, TiVo has flipped the switch on remote access — allowing Roamio Pro and Plus units to stream both live and recorded content via WiFi. Of course, this functionality is only available to iPad and iPhone owners at launch. But Android support, along with cellular access, is expected in 2014 (with no word on other potential platforms). Further, anything locked down by your cable provider will be blocked. (Sorry, TWC customers and HBO subscribers.) Remote functionality will hit the TiVo Stream next month, bringing these very same capabilities to the base Roamio DVR and prior generation TiVo Premiere.

We’re planning an in-depth look after we’ve had a few days with the solution — is Roamio a Slingbox-killer? How does TiVo’s implementation compare to DISH Hopper placeshifting running on equivalent hardware? Will my wife loan me her iPhone again? Stay tuned…

Slingbox 500 Now Streams… In Reverse (Blockbuster VOD)

new-on-slingbox

Alluded to since launch, the Slingbox 500 ($300) has expanded its HDMI-output capabilities by introducing what we hope is the first of many apps. While historically Sling’s core competency has been beaming our home content outwards, this notable reversal pipes Internet content into the home… by way of Blockbuster On Demand. Blockbuster’s streaming service is equivalent to an Amazon Instant in allowing you to rent HD movies. However, they’re owned by DISH in the way Sling Media is owned by Echostar, and seems like a natural synergy.

When Mavericks Attacks!

“Free” proved a little too irresistible and I immediately upgraded both Macs in my possession to OS X Mavericks as soon as the download became available yesterday. Unfortunately, the Macbook Air didn’t make it out alive. As you can see from the video above (click to play), it’s become stuck in an endless reboot loop … Read more
