By way of Kevin Hanson on Twitter and Verizon’s own forums, we learn that the television provider has discontinued their LG Smart TV FiOS app. The free streaming video app was first introduced in early 2012 as a means of providing LG owners boxless access to a couple dozen “live” FiOS channels… shortly after a similar experience had landed on the Xbox 360 gaming console. In fact, at one point, we thought FiOSTV-as-an-app was destined for all platforms, including Roku. However, given an industry move towards DLNA CVP-2 and presumed higher uptake from other platforms, we could see Verizon prioritizing development for alternate approaches. Indeed, they continue to crank away on their mobile experience, having just added three more channels (including Nick2 and VH1 Classic) and new “Dashboard view” recommendations to iPhone, iPad, and Android FiOS apps.

I didn’t know anything about CVP-2 until you mentioned it. I am looking forward to CES! Are you going?
I was booked and leaning towards it, but tweaked my leg about two weeks ago and the orthopedist suggested I sit the show out. Doubt I’ll be able to keep up with the Engadget-style firehose and may just try to keep to my normal routine. We’ll see. :)
Regarding CVP-2, it’s not here until it is. Hopefully this turns out better than tru2way…

I’m profoundly disappointed that you’re not sending a personal drone.
A helicopter equipped with real-time A/V and a funny balloon with your twit icon + message saying to just talk normally could’ve let you get better content than anyone out of CES. You could’ve been the Uber of disrupting orthopedists. With a funny balloon.
(And as to your permanent filming gear, I strongly suggest you go with 35mm. Archival concerns should trump all others.)
David, good call on pointing out DLNA CVP-2. I wasn’t aware of it until this post. This is why I love your stuff.

Looks like Verizon killed the FiOS app on Samsung TVs, too.

Verizon Mobil needs to be setup with Roku. At times I will watch a show on my Tablet I’d like to use my Roku to be able to watch it on our bedroom TV. What we are paying Verizon each month we should be able to use our Roku. Direct TV does not have a problem using the Roku why should Verizon?
