The Mio DigiWalker C310x GPS is on sale at Staples for a low $199 with no rebate paperwork to mess with. It’s not a Garmin Nuvi and it doesn’t offer text-to-voice, but where else you going to find a color, touch-screen, SiRF Star III GPS this cheap? Heck, it even plays MP3s (though no one knows why). Check out the review on GPS Lodge.
If Staples is out of stock, you may want to check back. I noticed it was out last night, but it’s back in this AM (for my zip). I did place an order, since I sent Mom the Garmin after she moved.
I bought one of these for $150 a while back. This item is essentially a stripped down Windows CE decide and therefore is TOTALLY hackable. I have a photo-viewer and video player also running on it. I have customized the interface and made this little device do MUCH MORE than it was intended to.
The GPS Lodge review does say this unit offers spoken directions: “and the unit offers clear spoken directions through its small but very loud speaker on the backside of the unit.”
Is that what you meant by “text-to-voice”?
By text-to-voice, I mean spoken street names… “Turn right on Willard” versus “Turn right.”
thanks for the clarification!
Looks like Staples shipped and delivery is scheduled for tomorrow.
headroll: Where can I find out more about hacking my new toy?
Many enjoy the Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS for the features it offers like Bluetooth compatible, Hands Free Calls, and the FM Traffic Receiver over Tom Tom and the rest.
