VideoLan VLC 1.0.0 Arrives

vlc

My very favorite non-HTPC media player reached the 1.0.0 milestone this week and includes some great new features. If you’re looking for a video app that can handle about any file you throw at it and is free, look no further than VLC. Major updates include:

  • AirTunes Streaming
  • Video Scaling in fullscreen
  • Frame-by-Frame support
  • More exact speed controls
  • Zipped file playback
  • Customizable toolbars

  1. VLC is great, but I generally prefer Media Player Classic-Home Theater, for the (relatively) easy hardware acceleration. VLC does handle subtitles better, though, in my experience.

  2. If “this week” is “old” we’re in trouble and may as well shut down now, finding new hobbies to occupy us in our free time. Not to mention, Brent originally blogged this two days ago on his site. I ran it after the fact because I find it meaningful and worthy of discussion, given VLC’s long pre-1.0 status including a period of time where they thought the French government would shut them down, and the sheer versatility of the program which not everyone may be familiar with… such as assisting in the hijack/presentation of a Slingbox stream.

  3. Travis go outside and enjoy the fresh air. Seriously…

I really do love VLC – my very favorite media player on all of my computers.

  4. Why do people even both posting something like “old news”? Utterly pointless and not constructive at all. If it makes someone feel “superior” to post such an inane comment on a blog, then I truly feel bad for that person.

Thanks Dave, for providing a nice little diversion to all the “in your face” blogs and journals out there. I like your real perspective on things. Keep it up!

  5. This is so awesome, I’m downloading it right now. VLC is one of my favorite programs. It is very simple, yet powerful at the same time. I can’t wait to check out all the new features.

  6. Travis = troll

Yes, Dave, I keep you in my RSS feed because Engadget and Gizmodo, etc, do get a little tiring (although I wish we had more frequent updates!)

  7. I wish we had more frequent updates too. Since I started my new gig a few months ago, I’ve been fully occupied at work and stuck in the car 2+ hours a day. We’re moving this weekend (10 minute drive to work!) and once I get settled, hopefully the post frequency will increase. Although, I also joined a gym to try to take a bit better care of myself which will also eat into my blogging time.
