Deal of the Day: Antec MX-1 @ $19.99

The highly regarded Antec MX-1 SATA hard drive enclosure is available at Buy.com for $19.99 after $25 rebate (PDF). Shipping’s free and if you’re new to Google Checkout, you can save another $10. Once you add your drive, simply attach this to a TiVo Series3 for additional storage… TiVo HD owners are going to have to work a little harder. Check FAQ entry #27 for hard drive suggestions.

If you’re in need of more drive space yet find this somewhat overwhelming, you can choose from a variety of pre-assembled eSATA drives (like the Seagate FreeAgent Pro I need to review) for use with a S3 or pick up the TiVo-blessed Western Digital My DVR Expander (currently limited to 500GB) to use with either the S3 or TiVo HD models.

FYI Some of the other DVR manufacturers allow additional storage too (though not FiOS TV as many have pointed out), so you may want to do a little research. Many, like the Dish DVR, use the more commonly available external USB drives — including travel drives without AC adapters. Though, I’m not sure if I’d trust those small 2.5″ guys without cooling to 24hr usage.

(Thanks, Russell)

  1. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’m considering replacing the living room TiVo HD with a small form factor PC. If I go down that path, I’ll replace the internal drive of the bedroom Series3 with something larger. Another case and more cables (AC, eSATA) turns me off.

  2. If you are going to install this in a TiVo HD, then you have to open up the TiVo case to make a change to the original hard drive software. If you are going to do all that, you are better off replacing the original and not have to deal with another component.

  3. I was also turned off by the idea of case/power supply/cables, so I did an internal drive upgrade to my Series 3. I bought the WD “Green” 1 TB drive and installed it. It’s been in my unit for several months now and works well, no discernable noise whatsoever.

I’m not a really heavy TV viewer, so I cannot imagine having more space (141 hours HD, something like 1300 hours SD). But a more important reason I wouldn’t want more space is that it seems the TiVo UI doesn’t scale to that much storage. Scrolling through program listings, selecting and deleting shows is really sluggish, since the UI has so many recorded shows to process.

  4. When I checked Buy.com Antec MX-1 is listed as Sold Out….I guess that is the Dave effect (instead of the Digg effect)
