$400 PS3 On The Way, Video Downloads Too

If the pricing/SKU dug up at Target is any indication, the rumored 40GB PS3 will indeed be landing on American shores (10/28?) for a low $400. As a satisfied Xbox 360 owner, I’m not really looking for a new gaming device. However, the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market that also happens to offer games could be tempting. Especially if Sony makes good on some of these other announced features… Megazone picked up more info regarding their Playstation video download and placeshifting aspirations:

“We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network,â€? said Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, during an interview in Moscow. “That is a Japanese and American combined effort to build a platform around a common software architecture to distribute video via the PlayStation network into the [PSP handhelds] and beyond.â€?

  1. Weird. With MGS4 a few months away, why LOWER the price knowing that there are millions of us waiting for Snake to return before buying a PS3?

  2. They’re doing it not for us geeks with disposable income (and waiting for exclusive games), rather they’re most likely doing it to go after the parents shopping for Christmas gifts that might be tempted by the Xbox’s lower price point. Same reason, I assume, that Microsoft is introducing the Xbox 360 Arcade model ($279) similar in price to the Wii.

  3. I think I’ll bite on a $400 PS3 when/if they’re released. I was thinking about an XBox360, but figured I’d rather get the blu-ray player thrown in. I know I could get the HD-DVD add-on for the XBox, but I don’t want to spend the extra money. I actually probably won’t use the blu-ray player that often, which should make the point moot.

Does any one know of a recent article comparing the two consoles? I’m fairly aware of the differences, but I’d like to read up a little more before I buy.

  4. I’m not aware of a recent article, but obviously the big differences are integrated Blu-ray player (PS3) and robust Live service of gaming and downloads (Xbox). One of the biggest factors for me in choosing Xbox (other than the HD movie rentals), as odd as it may seem, is I don’t like the PS2/3 controller ergonomics. PS3 probably has a lower hardware failure rate and is quieter. Most games are cross platform these days…

$50 more ($350 for the 360) for an integrated Blu-ray player is quite compelling. Then again, it probably also emphasizes that stand-alone Blu-ray players are still priced too high.

  5. Sony just put out a press release confirming the new PS3:

Beginning November 2nd, to further enhance the HD entertainment experience, the new 40GB PS3 model will come bundled with the blockbuster movie Spider-Man(TM) 3 Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and will be available in North America for a suggested retail price of $399 (USD/CND).
