Is There A Future In eBooks?

amazonkindle.jpgThe NY Times has confirmed Amazon does indeed have an eBook reader in the pipeline and it’ll be launching next month ($400-$500). Unlike Sony’s offering (down to $280), the Amazon unit will wirelessly connect to their online store for book downloads rather than (or in addition to?) computer syncing. Hopefully it’ll also include backlighting.

I love my digital media, but there’s something about paper I still value. During several years of subway commuting, I read books on various PDAs – and it’s just not as satisfying as having a book. I also couldn’t take them into the bathtub, find them on clearance, or mail one to my mom when I’m done. The other issue is something I frequently harp on – do I really want another (single function) device? And along those lines… what’ll happen to the (small) eReader hardware market if/when Apple starts selling eBooks for the iPod touch or iPhone?

  1. To me EBooks are kind of ridiculous.. I prefer paper but most of my reading is done on audio. I spend too many hours behind the wheel and radio is pathetic. I listen to 4-5 books/month on audio.
