Sirus XM radio intends to launch a Google Android application, letting subscribers tune into 120 channels of commercial-free music and talk programming.
The satellite radio network offers several subscription options for mobile users: An internet only plan or a discount on mobile service for existing satellite radio subscribers. Sirius XM offers 7 day free trial memberships so you can test the app before signing up for a service plan.
The Android app isn’t avialable yet, but you can sign up at the Sirius XM web site to receive an email when it’s available. The company currently offers apps for BlackBerry and iPhone.
The problem with this app (on the iPhone) is that they require a more expensive base subscription in order to stream. I tried the app on the iPhone, but in the era of Pandora, Slacker, and other streamers, I have absolutely no reason to pay extra money for Sirius’ product.
Yeah, when they put online streaming on a different tier I lost interest. In fact, I let my subscription lapse (again) (and pay Slacker $48/yr for a better online service). *shrug*
Seriously. This should be bundled if you have a radio subscription or available as a standalone subscription.
I actually re-upped my XM subscription because they offered me the $77/year plan plus free internet streaming access because I told them that was one of my sticking points. I’m glad to still have XM because listening to Pandora/Slacker in the car is still too cumbersome (hookup, interface, switching channels while driving, reliability).
I understand their desire and business interest in breaking up features. But psyschologically it seems to go against building loyalty for the platform.
