Will The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Launch In 2011?

Lenovo tells us they’ll be officially announcing the IdeaPad U1 tomorrow AM. Yet, this won’t be the first time it’s been announced… As Lenovo’s clever, sexy, and surprisingly practical hybrid laptop, with removable slate, was one of my favorite products of CES 2010. The original plan had the fully assembled rig running Windows 7 in … Read more

Home Automation Going Mainstream in 2011?

CES hasn’t even officially begun and, beyond the Android tablet parade and a return to 3D, it looks like there’s another technological trend worth keeping an eye on as several companies hope to crack the home automation nut. Of course, home automation technologies aren’t new but it’s generally the geeky cobbling together solutions. Yet with … Read more

OnLive Gaming Coming To Vizio HDTVs

We haven’t spent much time discussing the new OnLive gaming service, as I’ve had difficult time seeing how a micro-gaming console ($100) could find momentum situated somewhere between casual smartphone or iPad gaming and the Xbox/PS3 contingent. However, as OnLive’s game library is streamed from the cloud, integrating into the upcoming connected Vizio VIA Plus HDTV line … Read more

Amazon To Launch Kindle App for Android, Windows Tablets

Amazon already offers Kindle apps for Windows and Android, allowing you to purchase and read eBooks on a PC or phone. But the company has announced plans for new Windows and Android apps specifically targeted at tablets. Android tablets will likely have larger, higher resolution displays than a typical Android smartphone, which means a redesign is … Read more

The Tablets Coming Our Way at CES

Tablets will be on display everywhere at CES this week. It reminds me of digital photo frames and eReaders last year. Everyone had’em. Not that many were very good.

Here’s a round-up of some of the tablet launches planned in Vegas.

Toshiba

Toshiba took the wraps off its tablet entry before the official start of CES. It’s got a 10.1-inch touch screen, NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, and will run Android Honeycomb (aka Android 3.0). CNET’s Donald Bell liked his first hands-on experience with the device, though he only got to check out the hardware, not the software. He said it felt more polished than the Galaxy Tab, and more rugged than the iPad. It also sports two cameras, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (no cellular connectivity), an HDMI port, and removable battery.

Motorola

Motorola, meanwhile, has been teasing its entry tablet device for months. We’ll see the official unveiling at a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, but there are a few details we already know. It too will have a 10-inch screen and run Android 3.0. But the rumor is that it will also have a hardware upgrade option to add LTE. World’s first 4G tablet?

Boxee’s Next Box… is Iomega

I can’t say I’m the biggest Iomega fan. In fact, I’m still bitter years after the Zip disc click of death. Yet, we’ve gots to give them a little attention today as the next Boxee Box. The guts are quite similar to the original D-Link Boxee Box but, as you can clearly see, the design … Read more

Kodak Refreshes Playsport Vid Cam & Pulse Frame

While I imagine Kodak was hopeful of refreshing their semi-ruggedized Playsport Flip-style video camera prior to the holidays, I suppose it’s better late than never? Incidentally, I did exchange emails with Kodak this past fall wondering when/if there might be a new model… as I frequently recommend v1 (Zx3, ~$125) over the various Flip cams. … Read more

Microsoft Set To Take On AppleTV & Roku?

We’re still about 36 hours from Microsoft’s CES keynote. Yet the Seattle Times looks to have stolen a bit of CEO Steve Ballmer’s connected home thunder: Microsoft’s going to make a splash in this market with a stripped-down version of Windows tailored for set-top boxes and connected TVs. The software is a version of its … Read more
