Apple TV 4.1 Software Update Rolling Out

One of the key new features in iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad is the ability to stream media from a mobile device to an Apple TV set-top-box. There’s just one problem: out of the box the Apple TV doesn’t support that feature. That’s why Apple is rolling out an updated for the … Read more

TiVo Announces Supercharged iPad Remote App

Looks like TiVo is skipping a simplistic mobile remote control app, leapfrogging directly from their limited mobile website to a supercharged iPad app… that is much more than a mere remote. The upcoming app appears to replicate nearly all TiVo functionality in your lap and, most impressive, doesn’t duplicate what’s on screen — meaning you … Read more

Some Thoughts On The New MacBook Air

macbook-air-closeup

For the first time in almost exactly 2 years, I’m replacing my primary computing device — the original 13″ unibody MacBook is being retired in favor of a new 13″ MacBook Air. The screen may sound small but, given my various travels and mobile blogging activities, it’s the right size for me… most of the time.

Choosing to upgrade now is a bit of splurge considering this MacBook Air actually sports a less powerful processor than the one housed in the laptop it replaces. However, as I rarely render video on my laptop I expect a minimal real world performance hit. In fact, given SSD storage over spinning platters, the MBA should provide a more sprightly experience in many tasks. Additionally, in relation to performance, several publications (like Macworld) show these new systems perform admirably despite their small stature.

I find the 11″ MacBook Air very appealing — so sexy, so small, yet pretty capable, But there are too many compromises required for me to use it as a full-time laptop. So I went with the 13″ for the larger screen, larger battery, more powerful processor, and SD slot. Compared to my previous laptop, I expect to at least double battery life and the higher resolution display will be appreciated for certain tasks. Also, the SD slot is a very nice upgrade that I’m already enjoying – one less cable or adapter to travel with (or lose).

Two positive surprises so far…

Two Hulu Plus Notes (Price Drop, iOS Update)

Although Mari and I were preoccupied with Hulu Plus landing on Roku earlier this week, two other bits of H+ news crossed the wire. Wednesday evening, I noticed and grabbed the Hulu Plus iOS update pictured above. I’ve been grossly negligent in hitting the gym lately, which is where I do most of my catch-up … Read more

Google Docs Editing coming to iPhone, iPad, Android

Google Docs is an online office suite that lets you create, edit, and view documents using a web browser. You’ve also been able to view apps in a mobile browser for a while, including text and spreadsheet documents. But while Google Android has supported some basic spreadsheet editing, for the most part you couldn’t change a … Read more

More Slingbox iPad App Details

We’re still not quite there… but getting closer to the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for iPad ($30). As previously discussed, this isn’t an enhanced iPhone Slingbox client – but rather an entirely new app that’s reworked to stream at the more efficient (for Apple devices) H.264. Additionally, I’ve confirmed with Sling Media that the maximum … Read more

Official Google Voice iPhone App Now Available

Google has released a Google Voice app for iPhone. This comes after apple eased its restrictions on third party apps earlier this year and we started to see third party apps for Google Voice pop up in the App Store. The Beatles Land on iTunes, I Buy A CD (PSA)

That “exciting announcement” “that you’ll never forget”? Apple finally negotiated rights to distribute the Beatles on iTunes. Something I find forgettable and not exactly exciting. But maybe I’m just a cranky whipper snapper whose needs were met when Metallica went digital in 2006. Regardless, this “news” will surely go mainstream and I fully expect my … Read more
