HTPC: The Cost of Guide Data

As anyone running freeware HTPC DVR software already knows Zap2It will cease to provide free guide data as of 9/1. While I’m sure there’ll be (already are?) solutions that scrape or import programming info (from somewhere), Schedules Direct is attempting to fill the void with a pay service of $5/mo. Wonder how many PC users … Read more

Xbox 360 Update

Wondering about that Xbox 360 update last week? I was – Major Nelson says it provides support for the upcoming wireless guitars (and a more substantial Xbox update is coming later this year). Though I’ve got to say I’m pretty much over Guitar Hero… and ready for my Rock Band drum set!

Apple Releases My iTunes Badges and Feeds

Didn’t I say Apple would be getting social? Still nothing for Safari though… Hm. Anyhow, this is a small step in the right direction by providing personalized iTunes-related RSS feeds and graphical badges of various categories, color schemes, and sizes. Of course Apple isn’t being entirely altruistic here — they hope to mobilize customers in … Read more

TiVo v EchoStar, Part XVII – He Said, She Said

Speaking publicly on the recent Patent Office decisions… Both TiVo and EchoStar appear to hope for the best while appeasing (or is that calming?) their stock holders via the press. Apples Releases Online Photo & Video Site

mac-gallery.jpg

No surprise here… .Mac has gotten pretty stale in the Web 2.0 era, and for the last several months I’ve been telling anyone who’d listen that Apple would end up offering some sort of Flickr+YouTube mashup. And now they have. The only thing I’m still waiting on are those Safari social features.

The .Mac Web Gallery is different from a YouTube and Flickr in that it doesn’t support tags and searches, which I favor. Tagging photos in Flickr became some weird obsessive hassle. And when I did bother to get around doing it, it easily allows folks to swipe my pics (with or without my permission). The other problem that I’ve had with Flickr, is that while it’s powerful for those wanting to dig in, the average Joe (or my mom) may not have such an easy time with the paradigm and lingo. So I’m all in favor of Apple’s simple presentation: I have a gallery of albums. Pick one. Surprisingly, Apple does display the extended photo details and provides individual album RSS feeds. The seamless and efficient integration with iPhoto is impressive and pretty much what you’d expect from Apple. But, while I do appreciate the relatively spartan web interface for visitors, I’d like a little more control on the back-end… and I assume we’ll see that at some point, along with even more storage.
