Speaking of… Big congrats to ZNF’s own Mari who is now Senior Editor at Light Reading, versus a periodic contributor.
I’m trying to figure out what the DLNA requirement is for? Is it for extender type access? Equivalent of TivoToGo functionality?
I honestly thought Tivo did use the dnla standard for its mini devices. Shows how much I know. As someone looking forward to the plex client I was sortof unaware that dnla would not be used to efficiently stream my plex content from my network server.
To celebrate this news Cox and Time Warner immediately blocked all of tivo’s capability to transfer any show to another dvr or your ipad while allowing some of that functionality on the cable company’s cable box. Oh wait, they’ve been crippling Tivo for years. Carry on.
The story is broader than DLNA… with the various parties just getting started on a (contentious) CableCARD successor, this ruling was inevitable. Perhaps even more-so in light of a few questionable previous waivers.
I don’t see Plex Mr Zats. Is that why you call this site “Zats not funny”
I’m not responsible for TiVo’s deployment schedule. They’ve been highly unrealiable in the past with both public and private targets, but I had reason to communicate what I did. Publicly, they put a stake in the ground for 6/8. When they actually deliver is on them.
For more context on the shifting schedule, RCN had originally said they’d offer Plex on about May 20th but now they may be targeting June 9th. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29998228-
At least one non-beta tester, non-employee has already received Plex — but, based on his video, I’d probably still flip inputs for a better experience.
“They’ve been highly unrealiable in the past with both public and private targets”
Quite true. But they’ve been significantly better post-Haxe, no?
IIRC, Amazon rolled out on sked, and I think OnePass rolled out on sked.
Plus, they’re not responsible for what RCN says. Let’s see if 6/8 comes in on sked…
They’re iterating faster that’s for sure and this year have been better with scheduling targets and expectations… other than the several year Cox On Demand delay. ;) My point with RCN was more about 5/20, plus TiVo’s now-pulled supported note, indicating that Plex has shifted at least once. Which isn’t entirely surprising with software development. In theory apps like these are on a switch that TiVo can flip universally at any time assuming the right version of the underlying software is in place. It’s not clear to me if 20.4.8 is required or if 20.4.7 is sufficient.

and
“A friend of mine’s new motto is “accept the defaults” — he’s tired of fighting tech and he’s on to something.”
IMHO, these are two completely different issues. I’ve long been firmly on Team “Avoid the bleeding edge like the plague”, not only because it makes your wallet bleed, but also because it causes you more work, in a non-trivial way.
But fighting the defaults can, in many circumstances, cause a one-time-hit, followed by a long period of a better UX and less work. (Obviously, #NotAllCircumstances.) Dunno if you ever managed to get Ethernet running into your home, but swapping my ActionTec for a proper router is a fine example of the phenomenon. I’ve had years of a better UX and less work, after some minimal one-time hassle. (Though if your particular situation made getting Ethernet inside an ultra-hassle, that example could fall into #NotAllCircumstances for you.)
So I think your current thinking is half-correct…
I terminated that damn line 3 times and it’s not being sensed. That doesn’t neccessarily mean it’s not working tho – maybe the run is too long for my cheapie sensor. Or it could truly not work, but I won’t know until I call Verizon to flip me over – which has some risk. There’s a second line in the box that also lands in my homerun that I could try terminating… BUT there are multiple lines of that color, so I don’t know which to test if/when I do this and if the sensor is too weak for this distance, I’ll be even worse off trying four plugs with Verizon. So I’m kinda on standby at the moment. The (Asus) router hanging off the (Actiontec) router did improve my wireless range and speeds – so even without the full benefits of VPN, better port forwarding, etc I’m still better than I was. Hey, even my Fitbit Aria WiFi scale doesn’t require me to drag down the entire network given the better way in which Asus has implemented WIFi. My poor little Powerline pair is sitting unused and beyond Amazon’s return window. Almost makes me want to switch to Comcast to get wired properly. ;)

Play it smart. Threaten retention that you’re rapidly moving toward signing with Comcast, and then tell ’em that getting a free service call to bring Ethernet into your home would make all the difference…
Like I say, #NotAllCircumstances. But in general, follow Chuck D’s wise counsel and Fight The Defaults That Be!
I so hate talking to them for fear of weird billings things cropping up. I, and several I know, haven’t had it easy in that regard. Even the “review” Quantum router turned into a line item on my bill and three or four months of partial credits to offset. Speaking of which, I asked them last if there were any updates I need to know about – wasn’t so impressed with the first firmware (and boxed it up). DSL Reports discussion suggests many improvements, but still some open issues.
Back to TiVo, one CSA says 20.4.8 starts rolling Monday and it’s staggered. Wonder if they’ll flip the Plex switch anyway and figure the window for 20.4.7/Plex issues will be small… or there is no issue with the latest 20.4.7.
