TiVo Lite Isn’t For You

In response to TiVo’s IBC press release, we’ve received several inquiries. And I’m here to tell you: the TiVo Lite isn’t for us. Which is OK.

Incorporating technologies from Cubiware, Digitalsmiths and TiVo, TiVo Lite answers operators’ call for distinctive, next generation multi-screen experiences which can be used to improve their competitive position while also being very cost effective to deploy. Built on Cubiware’s CubiTV middleware, TiVo Lite enables TiVo’s award-winning experience on a range of low-cost STBs.

The Cubiware acquisition was all about getting a toehold in less TV-centric overseas markets with a more simplistic set-top. And, in short order, TiVo has obviously integrated the TiVo interface, if not full fledged, tricked out DVR capabilities, onto Cubi’s middleware. What we’re looking at is something akin to Evolution Digital’s TiVo-skinned DTA… which they themselves may be running Cubiware … with TiVo.

As for us, the higher-tech, television loving crowd… well, the 4k TiVo Bolt should make an official appearance real soon now.

Don’t you tell me what is or isn’t for me, Dave Zatz. You’re not the boss of me.

I think I like it, and that it most definitely is for me. And if I have to move to a less developed country to take advantage of it, I guess that’s just the price I’ll have to pay.

(Also, this is a test of Nate’s ability to receive email notifications. It’s also a test of Nate’s ability to receive RSS notifications, which is the more sensible route to go anyway, which Nate should be tech-aware enough to know. Please don’t delete this comment, or any other comments. Also please don’t post any more comments on any threads. Finally please don’t put up any more blog posts.)

    You’re such a tease Dave!

  3. As I side question, is the TiVo-branded DVR hardware that you can get from the cable companies the same as a retail TiVo? I assumed that it was just a TiVo that had an internal/unremovable CableCard hard coded to the cable operator, but the SuddenLink tech I was talking to thought their TiVo boxes were built by Pace and not the same.

  4. Depends on the provider and on the box. Some use Pace hardware or the previously mentioned Evolution Digital, which is not what TiVo sells at retail. And some provide Premiere hardware (called Premiere) and Roamio hardware (called T6). There’s also sort of a slim cable box+extender called the Preview, that was previously mentioned and only offered by a provider. Overseas, there has also been Samsung and Cisco hardware.
