The TiVo Slide QWERTY Remote Giveaway

TiVo has produced arguably the best dual purpose QWERTY-capable remote in the Slide. Granted, there’s not much competition (yet) in this burgeoning space. But TiVo has introduced something special — I expect its utility will only grow as they modernize and expand their online apps. Not only does the shrunken “peanut” allow you to type via Bluetooth (and bundled USB dongle), the Slide offers traditional IR support for basic universal and learning functions to control your television or accessories.

To expand upon my original coverage a bit, I’ve confirmed the TiVo Slide remote can be paired with hardware beyond the included Bluetooth accessory. By simultaneously holding down the TiVo and B buttons, the remote enters pairing mode. And I had no problem linking it to my Mac laptop. In theory, this process should also allow you to use the Slide with a PS3. However, to get a Slide going again with a Series3, TiVoHD, or Premiere, you’d have to re-pair it with the USB dongle by holding down it’s lone button and once again using the Slide process above.

I’ve seen quite a few comments concerning the Slide’s $90 price tag (along with disappointment in not being able to easily control multiple TiVo units). And, indeed, it doesn’t come cheap.   26. Hmmm…wonder if the keyboad is worth leaving my Harmony for. I also wonder why the mobile version of Dave’s sit complains that my comment was too short.

  30. Seeing as TiVo hasn’t created equivalent IR commands and hasn’t added telnet keyboard commands to any model except the Premier, I can’t use my universal remote for keyboarding. So this is my best option to avoid spending $90.

  67. Would love to have this, but not for $90! There’s a Tivo app in the Android market place that allows me to use my phones QWERTY keyboard for $1. That has been working fine for me so far.

  85. I’d love one too…the $90 price tag is a bit steep for a remote. $50 seems more reasonable, better yet a free one for loyal customers! :-)

  94. Want want want. My LCD television interferes with the IR remote, so a Bluetooth-based remote would be really useful for me.

  97. I’d like one of these but cost is way too high for the limited number of times I need a Qwerty keyboard. Besides, usually 2-3 letters in, and TiVo knows what I am looking for. Nevertheless, if I won one, I would gladly take it. Thanks Dave.

  152. I’m interested, but I’m wondering what the battery life is. I bought a TiVo Glo remote a couple years ago when they came out, but went back to using my original TiVo remote because the “Glo” seems to eat batteries.
