DISH Network launches Fandango Channel

TiVo and Verizon aren’t the only providers piping interactive Internet-based services to your set-top box. DISH Network has launched Fandango movie ticketing service on channel 100. The OpenTV-powered application isn’t limited to broadband-connected DISH hardware, and tickets can even be ordered over a connected phone line. By default, the app displays movies and showtimes near a customer’s zip code. However, the search can be expanded/customized. And a future rev of the Fandango widget will include movie trailers.

  1. Wow, one of the TV providers is actually trying to improve their DVR. Considering that the generic screens still look like they were built in 1980, I was beginning to think that TiVo had a monopoly on DVR innovation. I’ve never been a fan of the extra fandago ticket charges, but than again I don’t see a lot of sold out films. Now if we can only get TiVo to add placeshifting as a way to fight back.

  2. I’m surprised Comcast doesn’t have this. Don’t they own part of Fandango? Seriously every DVR has interactive TV except Comcast. When Tivo refreshes their UI to be true 16:9 HD, I’m all on it.

Way to go Dish Users. Now only if I had line of sight for one!

  3. Of course, in my mind, Dish’s killer feature is bargain HD-only lineups. I’ve got line-of-sight, but it would require visible coax across my living room. :/ Besides, I’m now stuck with Comcast in one form or another – my complex signed a deal with them. I’m paying $45/mo in fees whether I want to or not. (Plus more $ directly for higher tier and Internet.)
