TWICE reports that Digeo will be releasing a HD CableCARD set-top box to MSOs beginning later this month and offering a retail DVR direct to consumers in January. Though I have to say the author was quite kind in his coverage. No mention that this cable box (or a precursor) was expected in 2007 or that Digeo also had plans to launch two retail set-top boxes last year. Also no mention that the CEO stepped aside, half the staff was axed, and both (previous) retail DVRs were scrapped just a week after briefing the press at CES. So, please forgive me if I’m a little skeptical that we’ll actually be able to purchase a (new) DLNA-capable M-Card Moxi DVR in just four months. Of course, this isn’t at all unusual in our industry – SlingCatcher will be over a year late when it finally ships and Palm Foleo was killed at the zero hour. Lesson being, until products ship let’s take these announcements with a grain of salt. Speaking of which, where’s my Lenovo S10?

At least with other companies late or canceled products tends to be an exception – with Digeo Moxi it is actually shipping a product that is an exception. Of all the things they’ve announced over the years, since before Digeo acquired Moxi in 2002, they’ve shipped *one* product family – the BMC 9000 series. To be generous that was, what really two base units – 9012 and 9022, and the Moxi Mate for the 9022? And those came out back in 2004 and have been out of production for a while now.
Woah look at that front color LCD! The Moxi interface is pretty nice. Much more robust and feature filled than the poor I-Guide application. If this is available in Comcast land, I will be very interested. If a retail version is released, if it can communicate to Comcast’s Seachange VOD servers via Tru2Way or some kind of return path trickery, I’ll be very interested as well.
Yeah, there are things about their UI I like. Specifically, that custom ticker (news, weather, sports) on the bottom of the screen that they demo-ed on the boxes that didn’t ship.
The retail box they mentioned for early next year is a typical CableCARD dealio – meaning no SDV or VOD. The source article said a tru2way box would be available after July – I wasn’t reading close enough to determine if that was retail or for their MSO customers.
I don’t understand why they bother with trying to enter consumer (retail) market. It’s not like TiVo is rolling in cash… As for hardware, well, good luck to them!
At this point, until it shows up at Best Buy, I don’t really care.
p.s. Just bought a Dell Inspiron Mini 910. Supposed to show up next week. Might even get it b4 your Lenovo shows up. Sounds like Lenovo is having heat issues…
I’m sure this Moxi device will have some kind of a USB port to allow for the tuning resolver. It will probably be compatible with the Tuning resolver that works for tivo devices.
