Mail-order video game rental service Gamefly is now giving subscribers 5 DRM-free tracks each month. I assume this is nothing more than a marketing gimmick (plus they’ve added commissioned iTunes affiliate links), but it’s worth keeping an eye on. FYI The first five bands (that I’ve never heard of) are: RJD2, Little Brother, OK Go, Shadows Fall, and Thievery Corporation.

Ouch… never heard of OK Go?
I’ve seen that video before, for whatever that’s worth. My musical tastes are pretty eclectic but mostly limited to bands popularized in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I don’t get out much. (My top XM stations are Lucy and Chrome.)
I say that it’s nice to have things like this thrown in for free, but it’s not going to be something that convinces me to sign up for their service, especially since I haven’t the foggiest idea who those bands are.
Thievery Corporation is good stuff. I believe they used to operate out the 18th Street Lounge in DC.
Dave: I agree, my tastes reflect when I grew up. But I work at a university, and my staff is comprised of students. Plus, my wife enjoys current music, so I’m exposed to it at home, too. I just can’t escape the new stuff (and some of it is pretty good).
As for the XM stations: I plead ignorance there. I use my iPod. A lot. I dislike others making my listening selections for me. ;)
Tom, Just downloaded the freebie (“Supreme Illusion”) and it’s pretty cool.
Geoffrey, I’m pretty lazy and have given up (for now) on maintaining my iTunes play lists. (My iPod is collecting dust.) Chrome is disco, Lucy is classic Alternative/Grunge.

A glowing endorsement! ;)
I know you’re anti-establishment, so you’ll be happy to hear Melissa’s iPod is also collecting dust. ;)
