TiVo In The Replay Booth

Ben Drawbaugh (who you probably know from Engadget HD) and I share a love of college football. While I was recovering Friday night, he caught South Florida’s upset of West Virginia. He also spotted a Series2 TiVo unit in the replay booth. Which is really no surprise – We’ve been hearing for years how TiVo is used in a variety of sports, both amateur and pro. And now we have visual proof!

Bonus sports technology coverage: Check out this NBC video showing the San Jose Sharks using Slingboxes (I’m employed by Sling Media) and TiVos on the bench and on the road.

  1. Watching Inside the NFL last week on HBO, they did a piece on the office where they watch all officiating of the games, and then make a tape for the commissioner. It looked like they all use DirecTiVo’s, about 30 of them.

  2. While sitting in the Anaheim Ducks press room, sometimes you’ll see a Tivo pop up on one of their tv’s (the one controlled by the coaches) as they record different college hockey airings. Also, many of us in the TV business use Sling to monitor other games in progress, our own games when the dish gives out or simply in the hotel room after a long day.

  3. Har har, you obviously live in Tampa. You should drop by the president’s office and let him how they’re geographically confusing folks all over Florida (and beyond) – I was in my mid-20s before I realized “South” refers to Western Central. :p

One of the shows was totally dissing FSU (the week *before* the game) and said they were no longer in the top 3 of FL schools. Ouch.

  4. Until USF comes up with the stones to schedule FSU, UF or UM, then they’ll always be that little school where nobody knows where they are. Auburn was a step, but WVU is a conf game and they’ll probably get stomped on by L’Ville.

All that said, I could easily see an Orange Bowl with USF (Big East #1) vs UM (ACC #1) (provided both schools win-out).

*Disclaimer: 1 more summer and i finish my degree at the U*

  5. UM?? Haha, they’ll be lucky to win any of their conference games. After all, there is only one Duke in the ACC, and they could barely beat them.

As for USF’s schedule, I’m not sure why they can’t get the other big Florida teams on there. I’ve heard that USF wasn’t willing to give in to their demands. Seriously if USF wants to go anywhere they’ll have to go undefeated, which is something they yet to be able to do. Somehow they always manage to choke on a game they should’ve won.

  6. I’ve always wished the CNBC’s and CNN’s would use TiVoes on Live events, so instead of breaking into another interesting story, just play the President’s Press Conf 90 seconds behind…
