Word out of Sony’s (New Zealand) office is that they’re “hoping” to offer a digital tuner bringing DVR functionality to the PS3 next year. The blog coverage has gotten way ahead of itself… First off, a “digital tuner” in the South Pacific or Europe is not the same as an ATSC or CableCARD tuner needed for the US. Second, while Sony did produce TiVo hardware at one point – that relationship is dead even if the contract is not. Can we stop the silliness now?

I’m not saying Sony won’t introduce a tuner accessory in the US. What I’m saying is that it won’t be the same as whatever the NZ marketing guy referred to. And they won’t be using a TiVo interface.
I couldn’t agree more – I’m going to be doing a post about this too. People are getting a bit carried away.
Dave, I have a product idea for Sling, what’s your email (or hit me up at mine)?
Where are your sources. Your guess is as good as any ones. Sounds like your a credible journalist…but I guess not because I didnt see any real proof saying that Sony will not incorporate Tivo tech.

Esteban: I’d argue that my guess is probably better than most. Sony licensed TiVo Series1 software and I obviously feel strongly enough to proclaim publicly that you won’t be seeing it on the PS3. Not to mention one of Sony’s TiVo champions left and is currently CEO of Digeo – maker of the Moxi DVR. Most folks also seem to have forgotten Sony has been producing DVR products (since the TiVo deal) here and abroad using a non-TiVo interface.
