Apple Releases My iTunes Badges and Feeds

Didn’t I say Apple would be getting social? Still nothing for Safari though… Hm. Anyhow, this is a small step in the right direction by providing personalized iTunes-related RSS feeds and graphical badges of various categories, color schemes, and sizes. Of course Apple isn’t being entirely altruistic here — they hope to mobilize customers in advertising iTunes content.

My iTunes features:

iTunes is giving you an effortless way to keep your friends up-to-date with your favorite music, TV shows, movies, and more. My iTunes widgets are simple, self-updating add-ons for your web page, social-networking profile, or blog.

Use My iTunes to share your top reviews, favorite artists, and new music, movies, and TV shows from the iTunes Store with anyone who visits your site. You can also use the My iTunes feed with any standard RSS or ATOM feed reader.

And never mind those random musical selections to the right. I have no idea who they belong to. Jerry Was A Race Car Driver? Yick! ;)

  1. Nice music selection! It’s amazing how different your album purchases are from your song purchases. I guess a little diversity never hurt anyone! ;)

I have to admit that I’m somewhat surprised at your TV show purchases. It looks like you’ve purchased several Battlestar Galactica episodes. Now, I’m totally loving that series and I’m saddened to know that the upcoming season is the end, so I’m not knocking the content. I’m just curious… don’t you have a TiVo for this sort of thing? :)

Speaking of which, I wish TiVo would come out with some social networking badges. I’m not asking for anything fancy, but maybe something that shows what’s in my queue, or the top ten shows in my season pass or even the last 10 shows that I watched… u’know, something for us TiVotees to show off our geekiness. Is that too much to ask?

  2. I started watching Battlestar in the middle of the second season. So I rented the first season on Netflix and caught up on season 2 via iTunes while I was simultaneously TiVo-ing new episodes. My laptop at the time had SVideo out, so I watched the iTunes on TV. Sadly, the first season is the only one I really enjoyed.

I’ve also downloaded a few episodes of Lost in Season 2 – I can’t remember why, maybe there was a conflict on TiVo or Melissa canceled the recordings. Other shows were freebies.

I agree TiVo badges would be good. We can roll our own pulling XML from our Series2 boxes, but it looks like a PITA and not for novices – unless someone does the hard work and beautifies it for us. (This Apple stuff is quite attractive.) Netflix could do something a bit more polished too.
