  1. Since my wife gave me a PSP for Christmas, I have not put it down.

BUT I have never wanted to buy a movie in UMD format. I thought about renting one from Gamefly but I would rather play games on it and watch movies on a bigger screen called a TV.

  2. I had a PSP briefly when they first came out. Thought the screen was beautiful, but the ergonomics just didn’t work for me. A buddy of mine stopped using his and just sent it over — I’m going to give it another shot since the price is right. The UMD movie business has definitely failed. Sony could have done much more to promote it both on the PSP and beyond… such as create a Spiderman-branded UMD player for kids to hook up to TV or an even an integrated TV/UMD player.

  3. I have a Nintendo DS Lite. I was never interested in buying a PSP, mainly because I saw it primarily as a game machine and the games were simply warmed-over ports of PS2 titles. The DS has far more interesting software.

The UMD drive was the PSP’s fatal flaw. It showed how Sony was completely head-in-the-sand about online downloadable content. The space for the UMD drive should have been given to a 30 GB HD, and the primary means for supplying media (audio and video) should have been via download, ala iPod. Retail games could be distributed via cards that go in the Memory Stick slot, similar to what Nintendo does with the DS.

Just one more example as to why Sony needs to be hit with a clue stick the size of a baseball bat.

  4. A postscript – a friend of mine who owns a PSP says that a major problem with the system is the pricing of games. Games typically run around $50, which is very steep for a handheld platform, even one as technically sophisticated as the PSP. There’s a lot of titles he’s interested in trying, but not at that price.
