Ecobee To Expand Smart Home Capabilities With Video Camera

ecobee intends to round out their smart home lineup with an indoor camera.

While details are light, given Amazon investment and the existing product line, we can assume the ecobee camera will feature Alexa integration … if not outright control via its own mic, as those amber lights pictured in the company render up top can also flash blue. (For reference, here’s how the ecobee Switch+ handles lighting cues.) Further, I’d hope beyond typical video recording duties, this unit also acts a presence sensor for ecobee thermostats – bonus if it includes room temp and humidity capabilities. Lastly, I’d assume big changes coming to the ecobee app to accommodate video playback and hopefully a number of Arlo-esque rules to manage recording.

As to launch timing and pricing, including possibility of a subscription service, none of that is yet clear. Stay tuned!

  1. The render doesn’t show IR lights for night vision – could they be present, but not illustrated, below the camera lens? Could the status LEDs up top serve double duty? Hmmm. :)

  2. “The render doesn’t show IR lights for night vision…”

The article doesn’t mention IR lighting nor night vision (there are other kinds), so please explain.

    SAFETY FIRST
And I would hope this is truly a ‘smart’ camera that would notify the owner *and* first responders if there is motion where there should be none, and be capable of recognizing fire or contain a rate-of-rise heat detector.
