Sling Media has launched updated versions of its SlingPlayer Mobile apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The new apps add support for video out, which means you can transmit video from your mobile device to a TV over a component cable — assuming you have the correct adapters.
You’ll still need a Slingbox to get the most out of the SlingPlayer Mobile app. What the Sling system lets you do is connect a Slingbox to your audio and video components and then stream live TV or recorded shows from your DVR over the internet to the SlingPlayer Mobile app on your iOS device or to a PC or other device with SlingPlayer software.
Now that the SlingPlayer iOS app supports video output, you can use it to do things like record a movie on your home DVR, drive over to your buddy’s house, connect your iPhone to his TV, and watch the movie without burning it to DVD or other physical media first.
In order to use the new video out capability you’ll need an iPad or iPhone 4 (although the latest iPod touch may work as well, since it has the same processor as the iPhone 4).
SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPad is available from the App Store for $29.99.
could you recommend a cable i can pick up?
This is the official Apple cable (~$40). Although there are many third party offerings for less. Can’t vouch for any yet, but this has been on my todo list.
Does this new version work with my WMV-powered slingbox AV?
Wish they would do this on Android. The HDMI port on my EVO has not been used yet.
thanks! i’ll pick up the cables and try this out. This is going to be pretty wild!!
any idea if this will work with Dish slingloaded VIP 922 DVR?
Forget video out, I’m waiting for AirPlay! Course I guess the long delayed 4.3 iOS version has to ship before that can happen….
They just updated the Android app too, no video out, a few new features.
Interesting thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that the android app will not show up or work on Android 2.3 devices..my nexus one just updated and now I lost sling player after paying 30 for it…they better update it with 2.3 Support asap! Idk if it works on the xoom yet but I’m guessing it has the same problem.
i’m hoping airplay will be built into osx. i’m not getting an appletv now that i got me a mctivia
so this sort make your idevice and hopefully android devices into a slingcatcher? cool since my archos 70 has hdmi out.
$30 for the app? geezus, ripoff city.
How does this work with Justin TV can you stream video out live to your TV via component AV leads?
