One of the key new features in iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad is the ability to stream media from a mobile device to an Apple TV set-top-box. There’s just one problem: out of the box the Apple TV doesn’t support that feature. That’s why Apple is rolling out an updated for the Apple TV today at the same time as it’s pushing out iOS 4.2 to users.
Apple TV 4.1 supports AirPlay which lets users stream photos, music, and video over a home network.
According to MacWorld, the new Apple TV also includes a feature called VoiceOver. This makes it easier for visually impaired people to use the Apple TV, as it reads menus and other information out loud to you. MacWorld shot a video of VoiceOver in action, which you can check out above.
Don’t TiVo, Apple, et al realize it’s a holiday week? I don’t have time to cover it all. In fact, I have to dig out and unpack my Apple TV tonight (we’re moving in a couple weeks) so I can see if AirPlay lives up to our hopes and the hype. I’m real curious to see if I can stream *any* video from the iPhone to ATV or if it’s up to app developers to enable that functionality. Otherwise, I’m waiting for some Internet-connected and AirPlay capable speakers to compare to Sonos.
OK… both iPhone and Apple TV updated.
So far most of my video apps (like Hulu) don’t pipe video the the TV. Some that do (like The Onion) only seem to send audio. iPhone audio apps just playback over the Apple TV menu screen (like Slacker). But if your volume slider is hidden you may not have any idea how to start or stop AirPlay. I fired up Sirius XM and it was playing automatically through Apple TV and it took me a second to figure out how to find and activate the volume bar (in settings) to see the icon to kill it. Needs much polish… But I assume audio-only AirPlay from iPhone to connected speaker system will function better.
Using my iPad, I tried a video from ESPN’s home page and only got the audio. On the other hand, I was able to stream audio & video of a music video in my playlist from my iPad to the Apple TV. I have only played with the AirPlay feature briefly, but it has potential.
