CineXPlayer was released last week for iPad to much fanfare because it’s the first app featuring Xvid playback on the Apple tablet. People were amazed that Apple would allow a video player that plays more than the handful of Apple-approved file formats, but what was missed was the low quality of the application itself.
The video playback app looks nice, and CineXPlayer definitely supports more file formats than the native iOS video player (like DivX, Xvid and H.264), but I had a hard time finding files that would actually play in CineXPlayer. I also believe some of that excitement was misunderstood… as there are all sorts of video playback variants in the App Store. SlingPlayer handles WMV, for example. But the reason no one’s seen a video app like this before is because it’s hard work to produce for little or no money – with obviously no guarantees of approval. Plus many codecs are not licensed in equivalent software and are used without permission. It doesn’t *seem* to be a big deal, but if Apple pays attention or receives a notice, the apps might not make it or last.
