The folks behind doubleTwist have been providing an easy way to sync media with an Android device for a while. But up until now you’ve had to plug your phone into your computer using a USB cable to sync data, perhaps taking the whole “iTunes for Android” thing a bit too far. In order to transfer files over a USB connection, you also had to mount your phone’s SD card, which meant that you couldn’t always run apps installed on the SD card while syncing your phone.
Now, doubleTwist has launched a new app called AirSync which eliminates the need for cables.
Here’s how it works. You download the latest version of doubleTwist for your Mac or PC and run it. Then install doubleTwist on your Android phone and either click the AirSync icon to upgrade or download AirSync from the Market. Read the rest of this entry »
Excellent feature! Just wonder how much the battery is taxed when trying to transfer a large amount of data. Connect to USB for any initial sync, but then being able to wirelessly sync after that would be killer.
Winamp also came out with the wifi sync just yesterday. Any thoughts on which works better?
@Tom: Actually, Winamp has been offering WiFi sync for a few months. The big news in yesterday’s update was that Winamp was exiting beta and adding support for Shoutcast streaming.
But Winamp only supports music sync, not photos and videos. doubleTwist has the leg up there.
On the other hand, I was actually able to get Winamp sync to work on my PC. doubleTwist was more problematic, more resource-heavy, and it has a strange habit of changing the default fonts for my Google Chrome web browser. Personally I prefer Winamp, but YMMV.
I tried it yesterday. I still prefer Sugarsync for Android, more options and flexibility.
I purchased the program last night for 99 cents and it works, but it killed my battery from 70% to 15% just copying one playlist of about 25 songs.
I purchased it last night and I have to say, I love being able to leave my phone plugged in, in another room and being able to update what music is on it. Worked very well for me last night and I’m definitely going to stick with the doubleTwist wifi sync.
This is the sort of thing I wish the iPhone would do. Plugging in via cables is so 00’s.
The killer feature here would be to automate it, e.g. I plop my phone into its charging stand at night and a 3 in the morning it automatically syncs with my computer, which already downloads the latest podcasts etc, also refreshing my music collection on my phone so I’ve got something different on their every day (whether from my collection or just an on the go set of music from my streaming music service).
No effort on my part. That’s what I want.
I’ve been using tunesync for a while now, doubleTwist started taking forever to start up on my PC since they added all the iTunes-like bloat, and it always left errors on my sd card and I’d lose everything after trying to sync.
