TiVo Now Selling MoCA Bridge

tivo-moca-bridgeAs we ponder an uncertain TiVo retail future, the non-DVR company ;) is now selling a MoCA bridge ($80) to wire up multi-unit households that don’t have Ethernet colocated with their hub.

You will need one TiVo Bridge Adapter if your DVR cannot use a wired Ethernet cable to connect to your home network. If your DVR can use a wired Ethernet connection, you do not need TiVo Bridge; just connect a coax cable to your DVR, and you’re all set!

The TiVo-branded (Actiontec) adapter was originally unveiled at CEIDA last fall but is obviously available to both integrators and customers alike. As a FiOS household, running Verizon’s mostly sufficient router, my coaxial cable is already lit up for networking and works well in a Roamio+Mini configuration.

  1. Thanks for the heads-up. I’ve been wondering when/if they’d ever get around to marketing it.

They’ve been selling MoCA bridges (adapters) via their online store for years, now; the main point/value of this particular product is that it is a MoCA 2.0 bridge, of primary value to TiVo BOLT customers — since the BOLT is the only MoCA 2.0-capable TiVo device.

Note that this is a TiVo re-branding of the Actiontec ECB6000, which matches the MoCA 2.0 capability of the BOLT. Those looking to maximize their coax networking bandwidth, in general, may want to consider the ECB6200 (or equivalents).

  2. Oof. Hmmm… actually, the good news that Tivo’s making this new MoCA 2.0 adapter available appears to come with associated bad news: they’re no longer offering MoCA 1.1 adapters via their online store (which typically offered the best price).

  3. They sent you this white TiVo-branded, MoCA 2.0 one? It hadn’t been on sale via their site or Amazon until this month. That’s not to say they didn’t have them available, tho…

  4. So does the newer Tivo Mini (TCDA93000) support MoCA 2.0?

    No.

The BOLT is the only MoCA 2.0 TiVo “box.”

  5. I’d agree that this excerpt from the TiVo posting you referenced is misleading…

At the CEDIA Expo in Dallas, we introduced the TiVo Bridge®, our first multi-room networking adapter, equipped with MoCA 2.0, the latest generation of MoCA technology. The TiVo Bridge provides the highest-quality multi-room video at 450mbit/sec; best of all, the TiVo BOLT, TiVo Roamio Pro®, and the TiVo Mini® have TiVo Bridge technology built right into the device.

Saying the other TiVo devices “have TiVo Bridge technology built” in implies these devices have the same technology, rather than their being only MoCA 1.1-capable.

  6. That paragraph is exactly why I asked. The newer mini is usually paired with the Bolt, so I was hoping it was 2.0 compatible. Maybe I will open a ticket with Tivo and see.

  7. The BOLT is the only MoCA 2.0 TiVo box; all the others (both Mini versions, 4-tuner Premieres and 6-tuner Roamios) are MoCA 1.1, and so can network via MoCA with a BOLT but will be limited to MoCA 1.1 speeds.

I’ve reported the misleading text to TiVo’s Facebook page.
