Will you look at that. Not only is DirecTV taking NFL over-the-top for DirecTV subscribers and non-subscribers alike (as they did last year), they’re expanding their reach beyond mobile devices like the the iPad and will stream live football direct to the Sony PS3 in 2011. This is a massive deal given the NFL’s status in the US as not only the premiere sports league but also as one of the most lucrative entertainment properties of any stripe. And this marks the first time the NFL will all be available to a television-based device over the Internet. Minus those in market games, of course.
Engadget reports non-DirecTV subscribers will be able to order the streaming-only version of Sunday Ticket for $350 as of September 1st. As I said last year, “it doesn’t come cheap. But they don’t call it Super Fan for nothing.” Then again, I’m sure I spend more than that at my local wing joint in any given season. Bonus? The PS3 price drop – now only $250. Is it too early to declare Sony’s more-than-gaming platform as box of the year? Although there’s still time for additional lean back partners to be announced…
I wonder what the quality of this is going to be? I agree, it seems to be quite coup for both firms
Since I would consider myself as maybe just a touch more than a casual NFL fan, $350 would be a little steep for me. However, I love the idea of offering packages like this independent of a cable/satellite subscription. This is huge particularly since the NFL is far and away the most popular sport and carries a lot of weight. This should go some way toward encouraging other content owners to make their content available outside of traditional mediums.
I wonder how much our lives will be shortened if we added up all the hours watching NFL sunday ticket, (1 hour equals 24 minutes less life, right?)
This would possibly get me to buy a PS3. I’m not at all a gamer, but the costs are close. I think I may skip it this year, since the Steelers should have at least 6 national games that I don’t need to go out to the bar to watch. A few less national games and the costs start to approach what I spend at the bar watching the games… Nice pickup. Maybe Sunday Ticket will come to other devices soon.
Too bad they dont offer just the RedZone channel. I would pay just for that one channel.

Yeah, but remember if you’re not a DirecTV subscriber, you have to prove that you’re not able to get the service in your area in order to buy the NFL Sunday Ticket on its own. Wonder how stringent DirecTV will be with that rule.
Yeah, looks like DTVs way to charge almost as much as satellite service to people that can’t get it. If you could put a dish up it’s only a few bucks more a month to get 210+ channels and an HD DVR..

I think it’s great I now have the choice of watching any NFL football game of my choice, live! It’s a little expensive given I can subscribe to the Red Zone Channel (FIOS) for $50 a season, but I love the option. One thing I wonder though, terrible advertising. Why didn’t we hear more about it?
