BYOD: Free DISH TV On Southwest Airlines WiFi

DISH_southwest

No Southwest Airlines seat-back displays? No problem. Bring your own device (laptop, tablet, or smartphone) and enjoy free access to 13 channels of live television on board Southwest’s 400 WiFi-enabled aircraft in exchange for sitting through a mere 30 seconds of pre-roll advertising. Beyond mile high video streaming, DISH and Southwest are further collaborating on the marketing front with a nationwide push – new DISH Hopper subscribers will receive 12,500 Rapid Reward points and an iPad 2.

(Sadly, Southwest retired their non-stop IAD-LAS route and we rarely have reason to fly them these days.)

  1. Neat idea even if it is low on channel count (especially compared to JetBlue DirectTV and Virgin America Dish offerings). It doesn’t mention it but I assume it is browser based and won’t require an iOS/Android app to work (or flash type app for laptops).

In any case, while DirectTV on JetBlue used to be a my favorite option, these days, TiVo + kmttg + iPad are my entertainment option of choice today.

  2. Strangely, I only seem to watch TV Land when I’m flying – “catching up” on The Jeffersons and such. On the rare occasions I plan ahead, I’ll load up a movie – often iTunes, but if TiVo Stream ever supports Android… But more often than not, I’ll simply relax with a Kindle book. And it looks like the powers that be are contemplating allowing Kindles to remain on during take off and landing.

  3. Hmm, their press release clearly isn’t worded very well, because later on in the same press release, it says:

Clayton added: “Customers using DISH’s award-winning DISH AnywhereTM and Hopper TransfersTM apps on their iPad can watch all their live TV, DVR recordings and on-demand shows anywhere, anytime via Wi-Fi connection or Hopper Transfers. Now, on Southwest, they can use an iPad to watch free live TV and on-demand shows. It’s a perfect fit.”

so I can understand the confusion.

  4. I just got a Nook HD but can’t seem to get it to connect to the free Dish Tv on Southwest Airlines. anyone have any thoughts on this matter? BTW-I have the 8G with an 8G microSD card in, Not sure if this has anything to do with not getting it or not.?
