  1. Litigation and licensing seem to do more for TIVo’s bottom line than their retail business… which once again shed more subscribers than were gained.

  2. It’s the only way they’ve made any (real) money. If they hadn’t gotten the first infusion from Echo, TiVo would have been out of business, nad Rogers was DESPERTITE for that cash, which I believed Ergen always had on the table for Tom as a settlement that did NOT include paying TiVo for each Echo/Dish subscription of contesed DVR models.

The Echo /TiVo settlement was a clone of the Ehco/TV Guide Gemstar settlement, and both included included LIFETIME license for Echo of contested and almost all other TiVo patents (and absolutely all TVGuide/Gemstar) patenets outside of dispute, and TiVo got a couple of Echo patents, as well, the ones Echo was suing TiVo for infringement. Tom’s quote was he “didn’t want to wait for the Supreme Court” which would likey have resulted with TiVo having a “gun to the head” of Echo (what Tom Rogers really wanted) and TiVo reaping a richer reward, but financial matters at TiVo must have been near the end to give up just at their moment of total victory. Once that was done, everyone else just wanted to settle, but they did not get a boat full of lifetime TiVo patents, and at least a few I do know did have to pay per subscriber every month, the preferred TiVo deal.

Now, that brings us to 2018, and that will be the moment of truth. However, I think the whole Bolt thing is going to be a huge re-make of what we know of TiVo today. They have already have videos on their weekly Teleworld programming introducing the new logo, and the decision to just end Roamio in such a relatively short period since its introduction seems to indicate that Tom has a real plan beyond 2018 nad is going all in, and it starts in the coming weeks or months. We shall see.
