TiVo Lands Yahoo Screen (In Time For Community)

tivo-yahoo-screen

Although I may have burned out on Community, Yahoo has banked on it. And I know many of you have been eagerly anticipating its triumphant (over-the-top) return. Well, fear not TiVo lovers, as VP Margret Schmidt has surprised us with news that Yahoo Screen will be available to Roamio, Premiere, and Mini owners this week. Yahoo Screen on TiVo requires software version 20.4.6a or greater and appears very close to being indexed in TiVo’s universal search… for complete OnePass Community coverage.

  1. Yup. Had to go searching around to find the proper settings dialog to get it removed from my TiVo today.

    Yahoooooo-oooo!!!

  2. I signed up for some weird public TiVo super-fast-alpha-beta program that I can’t point folks to off the top of my head after I got my Roamio, cuz it didn’t have Amazon, and I was too late to sign up for that particular priority list.

So, for better or worse, I seem to get all the new features at hour zero.

(Worth doing so, if you like such things. Hasn’t caused me any problems.)

  3. Premiere, Roamio, or Mini? Thus far, I only know of Roamio owners receiving it.

(Probably going to take Chucky’s advice and upgrade to Roamio. Seems like a job requirement, if nothing else. I don’t like the idea of the 6-tuner being cable-only, but what can you do.)

  4. I wonder if the new build caused the first crash of my Roamio since I got it in August. Much better than the weekly reboots my 8300 needed.

Mwah ha ha ha! I have no idea why TiVo offered me a $50,000 bounty to get you to upgrade. Frankly, I can’t understand their reasoning on the matter at all. Your Klout score just isn’t high enough. But I’ll take the money, nonetheless…

  6. Not surprisingly, this is nowhere to be seen on my cableco-owned TiVo Premiere. New apps usually arrive very late to us, if at all. And speaking of new apps, has anyone gotten the iheartradio app yet?

  7. Enjoy your commission, Chucky – just sprung for the $500 job. I can upgrade and repurpose the 1TB drive at a later date if it’s not working out. Will have to figure out how to unload my XL4 and if I want to drop my second Mini, since I hate clutter and only have two TVs that I actually *watch* TV at.

Aside 1: TiVo has me down as purchasing my first TiVo in April 2002. Although I feel like I had one earlier that I bought used at a swimming pool parking lot, but fried it trying to upgrade the drive.

Aside 2: It’s pretty easy to justify the TiVo expenditure given 9 months or so of bonus affiliate income (although I’m still cleaning up links):

Yowza! Not 50k yowza, but still…

Besides the Roamio, which you’ll genuinely love, you can buy gold apple watches not just for both wrists, but also for both ankles. That’s how all the kool kids are rolling.

(Hell, if you wait a couple of years, you might be able to buy Yahoo!)

“I feel like I had one earlier that I bought used at a swimming pool parking lot, but fried it trying to upgrade the drive.”

And thus a valuable lesson was learned about purchasing items from swimming pool parking lots…

I think the time is fast approaching when I can go OTA and supplement with streaming services. I took the 10 year deal for a base Roamio and Mini, and bought a stream off of ebay for $90. I didn’t like the idea of cable only for the Plus or Pro. Here in the Bay Area I can pull down 35 channels with crystal clarity using a $15 dog ear antenna I bought from Radio Shack back in 2008.

  10. It’s getting close for me… but with my Verizon rate so low and locked in until 12/16 ($80 for Internet+TV), I’ll ride it out a bit longer. I will definitely put the integrated Stream and additional two tuners to use. Plus removing MoCA from the equation, given the base Roamio won’t bridge, would add other disruptions I’m not ready to tackle. For me to get reliable OTA via TiVo, I’d need an attic antenna. Whereas Tablo would work as a hub to distribute OTA to Rokus around the home.

Supposedly my Plus will be here Tuesday. I’m almost wondering if it makes sense to simply move my XL4 and extra TiVo Mini to my mom’s place — she’d save $20-26/mo in rental fees. But she’s comfortable with the way things are and she’d rarely to never DVR (we tried that before…). Hm.
