New TiVo Remote On The Way

new-tivo-remote-fcc

By way of the FCC (1, 2), we’ve learned a new TiVo remote and RF USB dongle are on the way. While the rear looks quite similar to the new TiVo Roamio remote, due to a short term confidentiality request, we’re unable to confirm if this is the incoming Roamio Slide with QWERTY keyboard or merely an accessory to bring the updated button layout and RF control to TiVo Premiere and Mini hardware. Related, we wonder if this mysterious device will return learning capabilities to TiVo’s remote stable. It probably won’t be long until the answer presents itself…

  1. Let’s hope this remote brings back the learning feature. I have to use two remotes because of my AV receiver. Bugs me.

  2. Haven’t had a NDA with TiVo since the Stream came out about a year ago… So I’m free to cover anything at any time. :) Not to mention we’ve never been fond of publishing on command and frown upon the midnight embargo.

  3. etune,

While you can’t do any more than the basic AV receiver commands you can program the current Roamio remote to power both your TV and AV receiver with the one TV power button. I currently have it set up just that way.

  4. I’d pay a reasonable chunk of money to get an RF remote for my Premeire. The Slide’s size and responsiveness were awesome right up until it broke. I’m sure they had their reasons, but the day they EOL’d the Slide was a sad one.

  5. Daniel,
The power button on the Roamio remote can’t control the power function on my AV receiver. Instead it controls the power on the TV. In my setup, turning off the receiver also shuts down the TV. With the learning feature removed, the remote turns off the TV but I still hear the audio through the receiver. That means multiple remotes on my coffee table.

The bottom line is, I would expect a $600 TiVo to include a learning remote. They went cheap. Maybe if they sell some more paper towel menu ads they can fix it for next time.

Yeah, we definitely need a +1 or Like button for comments… but how will Chucky feel if I require Javascript?

Meh. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s a thread, not a video game. You already cleanly and simply provided a +1 for that comment just by being aware of all internet traditions

  8. I have 2 premiums, 3 HD’s and 1 Series 3. I use Charter TV and have to use cablecards and tuning adapters. I would love to purchase a Roamio but am so frustrated with Charter that I might just divorce them. That would mean I would have a choice of U-verse or Aereo.
Question: has anyone tried connecting a Roamio to U-verse?
2nd question: would it be possible for TiVo to add an input on the back which would perform the function of the IR blaster? I have a slingbox connected to one of my HD units and the IR blasters are not reliable.

  9. William, Base Roamio handles OTA – which is somewhat equivalent to Aereo, if you can get reception and add a Stream. (When put that way, it seems way too costly.) TiVo will not work with U-verse and they. TiVo actually has implemented network control… and Sling would be wise to bake that functionality into their software and do away with IR control for TiVo. Megazone and I were beating that drum as far back as like I dunno 2008, but it never came to pass. Maybe one day? (The newer Slingbox 350 and 500 have built in IR blasting capabilities – less cable clutter and they seem way more powerful for whatever that is worth.)

  10. By chance, do you know if there is a better tuning adapter available? The MTR700’s furnished by Charter are always dropping and have to be powered down/up to restart.
I’d be willing to buy a better model!

  11. Tuning Adapters suck across the board. Best you can do is reach out to Charter and ensure you have the latest firmware, with hopes it improves and/or stabilizes things. If you already have it, well it is what it is. :/ These things are barely supported and the cable companies really have no motivation to make them better.
