Done With GTA IV

Dale still seems to be enjoying Grand Theft Auto IV, but I’ve had enough. Though sales have been HUGE, my copy of GTA IV is on the way back to Gamefly. The somewhat repetitive missions to advance the plot aren’t doing it for my short attention span. I also miss the more precise avatar combat control of Call of Duty 4 (or even Halo) and the driving control of Burnout Paradise over GTA IV. As I’ve done with previous editions of GTA, I dropped the story mode, acquired a small arsenal, found well-defended locations, and took out law enforcement. But that’s only fun for so long. Other nits: Text is too small and the environments are often too dark – even with the in-game brightness cranked.

  1. I guess I’m showing my age a little, but I’m perfectly happy with Wii Mario Kart. It’s fun for all ages, easy to learn and doesn’t involve shooting cops….

Then again, if I had a 360 or PS3, I’d probably have to try GTAIV out

  2. I agree on the point that GTA is only appropriate for well-adjusted adults. (Unfortunately, the game has probably made its way into the hands of some pre-teens.)

Though I don’t have the patience to play it through, I’ve been enjoying living vicariously (and efficiently) via Dale’s game diaries. Entry 4 is coming soon.

Still no Wii here, though Meilssa thinks we should have one.

  3. That’s funny. I’m surprised, I’ve really enjoyed this game more than any of the other GTA games I’ve played. You’re right about the darkness, though, I’m glad it’s not just me. Mario Kart Wii will have to wait!

  4. Did/does anybody else find that when playing online multiplayer that the image gets distorted (freezing) when there’s a lot of action on screen (rocket launcher, cars blowing up, etc.)?

  5. Jaydee, I’ve even seen slowdown in single player mode when a lot of stuff is going on. Pop-up too. Though it was infrequent and didn’t really bother me. Can’t speak to online though.

  6. Already, Dave? I can’t bring myself to put down the controller. While not perfect, I think this game is a great peek at what we’re in store for: greater realism, more interactive environments and enthralling storylines coupled with great characters and acting. Granted, it’s not the best shooter or driving sim, but it’s easily in a class of its own, and one step closer to my life goal of getting into a holodeck.
    Also, Halo sucks.

  7. how do you people even have time for videogames? if it’s not lode runner or hard hat mack (or conan or rescue raiders) i just don’t have time for it

  8. I wouldn’t say I’m bored, I would say I’m impatient. I’d rather see the GTA IV movie, though I’m enjoying Dale’s Clif Notes – better he invest that 37 hours completing 43% of the game, than I!

By the way and speaking of flying helicopters, I wonder if there’s a sequel coming for Battlefield: Modern Combat. I enjoyed all the different vehicles, including the helicopters which I would bail out of (using parachute) to snipe from the top of tall buildings.

  9. If you liked Battlefield, you might enjoy Frontlines: Fuel of War. Until GTA 4 came out, I’d spend most of my time on the Frontlines. Sadly, the developers are taking their time with the promised downloadable content and the maps/vehicles/weapons that came with the game are getting a little stale.
