How Will The Writers Strike Impact Your TV Viewing?

tv-strike.pngLast-ditch efforts to avert the WGA (Writers Guild of America) strike took place Sunday according to TV with MeeVee. However, those talks didn’t pan out and the picketing began today as predicted.

If the strike lingers, there will be very real consequences to the television shows you and I watch… The effects of which could be felt as soon as this week.

Here’s a quick rundown of how the strike might impact the shows on TV: Plan on very few, new late night talk shows and Comedy Central talk shows. No soaps (guess my wife will be unhappy), plus many shows will air the episodes they have written and produced and then run repeats – lots of repeats. You’ll also see tons of reality programming and not-new movies.

For the fate of your specific shows, read the breakdown at Brent Evans Geek Tonic.

  1. As I was reading the article at Brent Evans Geek Tonic I realized how much TV I actually watch. A lot of the shows I watch are on the list of shows that might be affected if this strike sticks around for a while.
    Now I’m just sad…

  2. The Colbert Report is listed but The Daily Show isn’t… I have to assume TDS isn’t going to run, either. Nuts.

But Battlestar Galactica isn’t affected, Boondocks should be all set, and my favorite new show (Torchwood) is a BBC show, so there’s not much to worry about there.

  3. Most of the shows I watch these days are last season on DVD (or football), so I should be OK. ;) Next up, 30 Rock – Season 1. (Fortunately, Season 2 of Dexter has wrapped and won’t be impacted. Good thing, since I’d have no reason to subscribe to Showtime).

  4. Lost….Scrubs….? Crap! Of those listed, I still have Journeyman, but what about all the other big shows like Grey’s Anatomy, the Housewives and others?

  5. I’ve posted to other blogs about this since I’m in a union (IATSE) and work in tv (sports tv). Industry-wise, this fight has to happen and I hope the writers get some of what they’re looking for… entertainment-wise, my 300-hr Tivo is packed with programming (Star Trek TOS anyone?) and I could really use a break. My Netflix acct is on-hold, so I could reactivate and watch the 25+ movies in my queue or there’s always sports tv, the ultimate reality-show.
