Where the Holidays Start in July

It’s that time of year again. We’re more than halfway to the holiday shopping season and CES 2008, which means CE companies are starting to panic about what they can get on to store shelves or at least out of production in time to take advantage of the year’s biggest buying season and biggest PR event respectively. Without doing any in-depth research yet, here’s my list of what we might see around Black Friday time:

Retail Moxi DVR – Dave’s already covered this extensively, and I can’t wait to see how Digeo brings its two models to market. What are the price points? Who will sell them? Has Digeo had any problems with CableCARD certification?

Touchscreen iPod/Nano iPhone – The rumor is some iPod/Nano mash-up will come out later this year. I don’t think it will make my X’mas wish list. A touchscreen on a device smaller than the existing iPhone? I’d need tinier thumbs.

Bigger HDTVs – Why stop at 108″?

Better Digital Photo Frames – If last year was the year they went mainstream, this should be the year to look for added Wi-Fi features that actually work.

Minor Tweaks to the Reigning Game Consoles – Last holiday season was a monster one for game consoles. While we won’t see the same kind of gaming madness this year, there will be some nice tweaks like larger hard drives. The big question: will it be any easier to score a Wii after Thanksgiving ’07?

Drop a comment if you have your own ideas of what will (or should) be available this holiday season.

  1. TiVo Series 3 Lite, SlingCatcher, Windows Mobile 6 on my Blackjack, Blackberry with WiFi, new Hamrony remotes, Guitar Hero 3 with wireless guitar, Leopard, ultra-portable Macbook, Wii Metroid.

  2. The iPhone nano rumour actually centered on a patent filing for using a scroll wheel to control a phone UI, so I don’t think the idea would be to use a teensy touchscreen.

  3. Oh, and I’ll second Dave’s wish for an ultralite MacBook. :-) Apple’s been out of the subnotebook game for too long. But I honestly think we’ll see the touchscreen iPod, and perhaps a touchscreen tablet similar to the iPhone, but bigger and without the phone component, before long.

  4. I agree with Mike T above. I have the Comcast HD DVR, now I just need the TiVo software to make it usable (Comcast DVR software “It’s Craptastic”).
